Waltham, MA --- The WPI Volleyball team closed out the Brandeis Invitational with a pair of wins on Saturday at Shapiro Gym. The Engineers opened day two with a 3-1 win over Roger Williams, using set scores of 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, and 25-19, and ended the day with a 3-0 sweep of Regis, going 25-17, 25-14, 25-22.
Match 1: WPI 3, Roger Williams 1
Anastasia Kelnik (Fair Lawn, NJ) and
Olivia Hutchinson (Erie, PA) each tallied 13 kills while setters
Lauren Boycourt (San Diego, CA) and
Preslie Jerebker (Denver, CO) combined for 42 assists as WPI grabbed the opener, 3-1, over Roger Williams.
WPI set the tone early, hitting .343 in the opening frame, but Roger Williams countered in the second, edging the Engineers 26-24. The Engineers regained control in the third set, with Hutchinson tallying four kills as WPI outlasted the Hawks 25-23. In the final frame, WPI used an 8-2 run to gain control of the set and held off a late charge from the Hawks to take it, 25-19.
Kelnik finished with 13 kills and three digs, while Hutchinson matched her with 13 kills and two block assists.
Bridget Spees (Saint Johns, FL) chipped in 10 kills and eight digs, while
Kylie Welcher (Los Angeles, CA) contributed seven kills. Boycourt orchestrated the offense with 22 assists and an ace, while Jerebker handed out 20 helpers.
Alana Harris (Lowell, MA) anchored the defense with a match-high 19 digs, and
Abby Harrington (Londonderry, NH) sparked WPI at the service line with three aces.
Roger Williams was led by
Izzy Unsworth (Milford, NH), who posted a match-high 18 kills to go along with 16 digs.
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, CT) added 12 kills, while
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, NY) chipped in nine. Setter
Ava McGonagle (Reading, MA) distributed 29 assists, and
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, CT) collected 14 digs.
Match 2: WPI 3, Regis 0
Welcher led the Engineers with five kills while WPI held Regis to a .056 combined attack, as the Crimson and Gray swept the Pride, 3-0, to close out the tournament.
WPI opened with a 25-17 win in the first set, powered by four service aces. The Engineers then hit .323 in the second frame and held Regis to a negative attack to pull away 25-14. The third set was the closest of the match, but
Julia Colantuoni (Amherst, NH) delivered the final kill as WPI secured the sweep, 25-22.
Welcher finished with five kills on .444 hitting, while VanDamme added eight kills at a .538 clip. Hutchinson chipped in four kills on .500 hitting, and Spees recorded three kills and six digs. Boycourt totaled 11 assists and an ace, while Jerebker supplied eight helpers. Harris captained the defense with 18 digs.
Regis was led by
Eva Catalanotto (Cheshire, CT) and
Avery Mola (Cheshire, CT) with eight kills apiece.
Beatriz Paulo (Newton, MA) added five kills, while
Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, CT) handed out 24 assists.
Isabella Seccareccio (Medford, MA) paced the defense with 12 digs.
WPI returns to action on Tuesday, September 2nd with a 7pm road match at Amherst. Regis hosts Wellesley on Wednesday, September 3 at 6pm, while Roger Williams hosts the RWU Invitational on September 5th and 6th.
