WORCESTER --- The WPI Women's Cross Country squad finished seventh overall paced by
Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) who finished 41st overall in the 135-runner field at the Cardinal Invitational, including nationally-ranked programs, hosted by Wesleyan at the Wes Fuhrman '05 Trails Cross Country Course at Long Lane Farm in Middletown, Connecticut on Saturday morning.
MIT, ranked as the top team in the USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country Week 1 National Coaches' Poll, took home the race title with a score of 22 points with five of the field's top seven runners. Coast Guard, ranked 28th nationally and seventh in the Mideast region, followed up in second with 76 points as RV Wesleyan (85), No. 9 Amherst (93), and Smith (179) rounded out the top five team performances.
Individually, Amherst's
Hannah Stephenson won the 6,000-meter race with a 20:45.0 time followed by MIT's
Kate Sanderson (20:49.6),
Gillian Roeder (21:07.0) and
Rujuta Sane (21:10.8) that finished second through fourth. Coast Guard's
Claire Semerod clocked a 21:22.5 time to finish fifth.
Reynolds completed the run at a 6:22.7 pace for a 23:46.9 time to finish 47th overall to lead the Engineers.
Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA) followed with a 24:21.5 time for 62nd as
Catherine Daly (Groton, MA) logged a 24:22.5 time for 64th.
Kayleigh Carnazza (Virginia Beach, VA) and
Beth Irwin (Guilderland, NY) finished 68th (24:24.3) and 69th (24:25.9) respectively.
WPI will return to the trails at the Paul Short Run hosted by NCAA Division I Lehigh at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on Saturday, October 3rd, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
