The WPI Department of Athletics is proud to continue its 2025–2026 Athletics Celebration, a daily series highlighting the top moments from each varsity program's season. The celebration will also recognize each team's Ray Cherenzia '73 Award honoree and selected programs' major award winners, as chosen by WPI Athletics' head coaches.
Men's Top Moment: Wyche and Mosher Represent WPI at the NCAA Championships
Seniors Brinson Wyche and Everett Mosher concluded the 2025 season on the national stage at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on November 22 at Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Their appearances capped a strong postseason in which the Engineers finished second at the NEWMAC Championship and fifth at the NCAA East Regional.
Wyche reached the national meet after earning All-Region recognition with a personal-best performance and crossed the championship finish line in 26:33.4. Mosher qualified following a fourth-place finish at the NEWMAC Championship and an eighth-place regional showing, then represented the Crimson and Gray in a debut cross country season that became one of the most accomplished campaigns in program history.

Women's Top Moment: Engineers Finish Fifth at the Paul Short Run
WPI delivered an impressive fifth-place team finish among 34 programs in the Women's College Green 6,000-meter race at Lehigh's 51st Annual Paul Short Run on October 3. The Engineers totaled 226 points in the 286-runner field and finished second among the NCAA Division III programs competing in Bethlehem.
Sophia Reynolds led the Crimson and Gray with a 23rd-place time of 23:43.9. Catherine Daly followed in 36th at 24:17.0, Kayleigh Carnazza placed 38th in 24:21.2, Beth Irwin crossed in 24:41.0 and Grace Connell completed WPI's scoring five with a 25:09.3 performance. The balanced effort gave the Engineers a signature early-season result against a deep, multi-divisional field.

Ray Cherenzia '73 Award Recipient – Men's Cross Country: Jackson Sobelman
Jackson Sobelman was selected as the men's cross country program's recipient of the Ray Cherenzia '73 Award. The honor is presented to a member of each varsity team who exemplifies the spirit of an "unsung hero"—someone who works hard every day, puts the team first over personal goals and performs the often-unrecognized responsibilities that are vital to the team's success.
Sobelman's selection recognizes the commitment, selflessness and character shown while representing WPI in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Following the season, the sophomore earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference recognition in the first year of eligibility and was one of four WPI men selected as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete.
Ray Cherenzia '73 Award Recipient – Women's Cross Country: Grace Connell
Grace Connell was selected as the women's cross country program's recipient of the Ray Cherenzia '73 Award. The recognition celebrates a team-first contributor whose daily preparation, dependability and willingness to handle the little things help the program succeed, often without widespread recognition.
Connell's selection reflects the hard work, sportsmanship and selflessness brought to the Crimson and Gray throughout the season. Connell contributed to WPI's balanced scoring effort at the Paul Short Run, finishing as the Engineers' fifth runner during the program's top-five team performance.
Additional Season Honors
Nathan Barry represented men's cross country and Sophia Reynolds represented women's cross country on the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The honor recognizes the student-athletes who best demonstrate the ideals of the conference and its Code of Conduct.
NEWMAC Fall All-Sportsmanship Team
Twelve members of the men's program earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference recognition, the second-highest total in the league. Barry became a three-time honoree; Thomas Skerry, Ryan Coceano, Craig Salois and Trip Williams added repeat selections; and Mosher, Alden Betterley, Colin Britner, Luke Holden, Jackson Hunt, Drew O'Reilly and Sobelman were recognized for the first time.
Men's NEWMAC Academic All-Conference
Five women's cross country student-athletes were selected to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team. Bethany Brown and Reynolds became two-time honorees, while Beth Irwin, Emma Conway and Daly each collected their first career recognition.
Women's NEWMAC Academic All-Conference
Both WPI programs earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors after the men compiled a 3.67 cumulative GPA and the women posted a 3.64 GPA. Mosher, O'Reilly, Skerry and Sobelman received individual men's All-Academic Athlete recognition, while Reynolds earned the distinction for the women's program.
USTFCCCA Team and Individual All-Academic Honors
Mosher capped a historic senior year with CSC NCAA Division III Academic All-America Second Team honors. The civil engineering major maintained a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA and became just the second student-athlete in WPI history to qualify for NCAA Championships in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field during the same academic year.
