Women’s Soccer Storms Back to Tie in Cross-City Shootout Versus Clark in NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER --- WPI Women's Soccer posted a pair of second half goals to overcome a two-goal deficit and tie Clark, 3-3, in its NEWMAC opener on Saturday afternoon at home.

With the tie, WPI stands at 4-2-2 and 0-0-1 in NEWMAC play as Clark sits at 3-1-2 and 0-0-1 conference record for the fall.

The visiting Cougars jumped out to a quick start as Clark recorded three shots within the first 8:18 minutes of the first half as Georgia Louis (West Hartford, CT) placed a ball across the box and connected with Emma Shaughnessy (Fairfield, CT) who knocked in a shot to the bottom right corner for the opening mark. Clark's Calabria Augustino (Mechanicville, NY) hit a through ball up to Solimar Rivera (Worcester, MA) who struck the left side of the net for a quick 2-0 lead just 17:31 into the match.

WPI's first quality look came a few minutes later as Aliza Margolis (Wakefield, MA) placed a ball on frame but was steered away by Clark's Saige Frazier (Uxbridge, MA). The Crimson and Gray's Margolis zipped a through ball to Tiziri Tizi-Ougdal (Acton, MA) who dribbled around the goalkeeper to a wide-open net to decrease the deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Engineers came out of the second half firing shots as Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY), Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) and Madisen McLeod (Ledyard, CT) all registered shots and as McLeod's shot was blocked Steckley corralled the rebound and placed into the opposite corner for the equalizer at 59:10. Clark's Madeleine Reeves (Denver, CO) collected a ball off a free kick opportunity and struck from 20-yards out and slipped through the goalkeeper's hands for the go-ahead goal with 5:53 remaining. WPI wasted no time as Reese Pszenny (Danvers, MA) hit a cross from the far right side of the field and deflected off the goalkeeper's hands into the goal for the equalizer just 35 seconds later. Clark's final strike by Reeves was blocked as the match ended at a 3-3 tie.

WPI continues its homestand as the Engineers are set to host UMass Boston in a non-conference match at 4pm on Wednesday, September 24th. Clark has a quick turnaround hosting Williams tomorrow at 1pm.
