WORCESTER --
Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) and
Arie Lang (West Hartford, MA) recorded goals just 4:01 apart in the fourth quarter to help the WPI field hockey team pull off a thrilling comeback victory over visiting Trinity in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Engineers, winners of three straight, move to 6-2 on the season as the visiting Bantams fall to 2-4 this fall.
Trinity got the board first at the 10:01 mark of the first quarter when
Brooke DiBiase (Chatham, NJ) knocked home a pass from
Claire Griffith (Westfield, MA) to put the Bantams ahead. The visitors outshot WPI 6-2 in the opening quarter with each team attempting one penalty corner. While the second quarter was scoreless, the tide began to change as the Engineers held an 6-2 edge in shots over the 15 minutes and were awarded all six of the penalty corners.
The third quarter was a defensive-minded session with just four shots (3-1 WPI) and three corners (2-1 WPI) before the hosts broke through in the fourth. The Crimson and Gray leveled the match when Powers stole the ball from a defender in the circle after a corner and lifted a back-handed chip shot high into the right corner with 10:58 remaining. Just over four minutes later,
Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) sent a ball in from just outside that deflected off the goalkeeper onto the stick of Lang who shoved it home for her second goal of the season and 25th of her career with 5:57 to go.
The Bantams would pull the goalie in the final two minutes but would not be able to muster a shot the rest of the way.
Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) went the distance in net, turning away seven shots to earn his sixth victory in 2025. The Engineers were aided by a defensive save from
Madeline Chase (Danvers, MA) in the first quarter.
Hayley Gable (Gilbertsville, PA) notched six saves in net for Trinity.
For the game, WPI outshot the Bantams 17-11 and held a 11-3 bulge in corners.
WPI returns to conference play on Saturday, entertaining Springfield in its NEWMAC home opener to wrap up Homecoming Weekend at 4:30pm. Trinity is back in action on Sunday, continuing its run against NEWMAC opponents with a 1pm home date with No. 6 Babson.
