WORCESTER --- Behind a deep offensive effort featuring contributions from across the lineup, the WPI volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke on Tuesday evening inside the WPI Sports & Recreation Center.
With the win, WPI improves to 8-6 overall with a 1-2 record in NEWMAC play as the visiting Lyons drop to 8-6 and 1-2 in conference action.
The Crimson and Gray jumped out to an early lead due to the help of six service errors by the visiting Lyons. WPI attacked efficiently as the Engineers posted nine kills on 23 attempts from six different attackers. Mount Holyoke's
Madeline Barton (Brookfield, WI) and
Elle Rimando (Mililani, HI) kept the Lyons in the set as they combined for 11 of the team's 13 kills as WPI took the first set 25-14.
In the second set, the Engineers stayed strong in their attack with three consecutive kills to start and back-to-back services aces by
Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela). WPI's
Anastasia Kelnik (Fair Lawn, NJ),
Julia Colantuoni (Amherst, NH) kicked off the attack as
Olivia Hutchinson (Erie, PA) and
Bridget Spees(Saint Johns, FL) rattled off three kills to start pushing the lead. Mount Holyoke's Rimando kept the visitors within reach as she posted four kills late in the second set but the overwhelming WPI attack featuring a flurry of kills from
Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA), Hutchinson,
Fiona Gillis (Manchester, NH) helped close out the set in favor of the hosts, 25-19.
The Crimson and Gray continued to fire away registering five kills on their first eight points with another Escuer ace to hold an 8-6 advantage. Gillis and Hutchinson maintained the attack as Mount Holyoke closed in to bring the match close at 12-11. Lyons attack errors led to a 16-13 WPI lead before the visitors responded with kills by
Olivia Murray (Miami, FL) and
Sonja Gray (Sharon, MA) that sandwiched a Rimando ace to even the match at 17 apiece. Hutchinson, VanDamme and three kills by Spees late kept the Lyons at bay as the Engineers secured the straight-set victory. The Crimson and Gray rattled off kills at a .300 rate with 15 successful strikes on 40 attempts.
Hutchinson led the way for the Crimson and Gray with nine kills as
Lauren Boycourt (San Diego, CA) posted 11 assists. Barton paced the Lyons offense with 14 kills as
Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, MN) dished out 30 assists on the evening.
WPI continues its homestay as they are set to host Smith in NEWMAC action on Thursday night at 7pm. Mount Holyoke will travel to MIT to take on Cambridge's Engineers on Saturday at 1pm.
