Lam Records Several Strong Performances as Women’s Swimming & Diving Competes at Colby

Jasmine Lam
Waterville, ME --- The Women's Swimming and Diving Program of WPI took a snowy trek north to Waterville, ME to square off against the Colby Mules, who were celebrating their seniors at the meet. The Engineers put up multiple season and personal best times but fell to Colby 82-207.

WPI started the meet off with second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, where the team of Maria Korneva (Boylston, MA), Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA), Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA), and Mallory LaPointe (St. John's FL) combined to stop the clock in 1:52.15. Sophomore Kang, swam a different line-up than her usual fly heavy schedule, as she tackled the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle. In the 100 back, Kang was the school's top performer as she hit the wall in 1:00.45, with Korneva placing sixrh overall at 1:02.39.

In the sprint freestyle, Kang was again the school's top finisher, as she placed fourth overall with a time of 25.35, ahead of fellow sophomore Veronica Finucane-Tuccio (Excelsior, MN) and her six-best finishing time of 26.51.  Kang ended her day joining LaPointe on a relay again as the pair took the middle legs in the Women's 400 free relay. Joined by Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA) on lead-off and Mainer Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME), the quartet posted the second fastest time of the day going 3:43.63.

LaPointe, like Kang, tackled some off events as she added the 200 fly to her usual 200 free, in both of which she was the school's fastest swimmer. In the 200, she held the slightest of leads (.01) at the 100 mark, flipping first in 56.74, but could match the pace of Colby's Zoe Buzzelli and wound up touching second with a time of 1:59.26. Joining her with a top six finish were Cook and Waite, who touched fifth and sixth with times of 2:03.01 and 2:04.38, respectively. In the 200 fly, Lapointe touched third in a time of 2:17.18. WPI's second fastest performer was Jasmine Lam (Dracut, MA) whose 2:19.22 was her first time under the 2:20 barrier as her previous best time was 2:21.88.

Lam, a first-year, had a great afternoon, as in addition to her 2 Fly PB, she was the school's top performer in the 200 breaststroke, touching 2nd in 2:29.99, as well as topping the list in the 100 fly, where her 1:01.74 was the second fastest performance of the meet, but also of her career. Fellow Massachusetts native Sophie Robinson (Westborough, MA) joined in on the career-best trend as she hit not one but two PBs. She started things off in the 100 breaststroke, where she completely skipped by 1:10, and recorded a mark of 1:09.51 and earned second place honors. A little later on in the 100 free, Robinson dropped over half a second off her old PB of 57.01 set last Tuesday (1/13) to stop the clock in 56.48, which was good for third place. A Wyoming native, who now calls Maine home, Aspenelle De Los Reyes (Gorham, ME) also hit a PB on the day, as her 1:10.35 in the 100 back cut just shy of half a second off her previous best, which like Robinson was set earlier in the week.

WPI has a quick turnaround as they appear in action again this Tuesday, this time squaring off against NEWMAC rival Wheaton, in Norton, MA, with an expected start time of 6:30pm.
