Hartford, CT --- Junior
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) was a perfect 3-0 on the day with a pair victories over regionally-ranked opponents and
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) posted an upset win over a regionally-ranked foe in the final match of the day to provide WPI a team victory as the Engineer wrestling team competed Saturday in a quad match hosted by Trinity.
The Engineers are now 6-6 on the season after defeating the host Bantams 25-23 in the final matchup of the day. Earlier, the Crimson and Grey fell 25-14 to Roger Williams and 44-3 to nationally ranked Johnson & Wales.
Starting the final two matches at 133 pounds, WPI found themselves down 23-21 headed to the final bout of the day against Trinity, Pavis took the mat with his team trailing 23-21 and the senior broke open a tight match in which he was winning 1-0 after two periods, with early takedown, a four-point near fall and riding time bonus point over the sixth-ranked 125-pound grappler from Region 1 to give the Engineers a thrilling 25-23 team victory.
WPI found themselves in an early 17-0 hole against the hosts but used three straight first period pins from
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) at 165 pounds,
Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) at 174 pounds and Tully at 184 before a
Joe Bednard (Stratham, NH) 11-4 win at 197 to seize a brief 21-17 edge. The Bantams retook the lead after a medical forfeit at 285 setting the state for Pavis' heroics in the final bout of a busy day.
Earlier in the day, Pavis got the Engineers off to a 3-0 lead versus Roger Williams with a 15-2 major decision at 125 points before the Hawks used a pin and five straight wins by decision to surge ahead 21-4. Tully accounted for WPI's victory in the dual with Johnson & Wales, posting an 11-5 win over the Wildcats' fifth ranked Region 1 wrestler.
All four schools will participate a week from Sunday on January 25th in the NEWA Duals hosted by Johnson & Wales. Action is scheduled to kickoff at 9:30am with the seedings and bracket release scheduled to be revealed during the week.
