Norton, MA --- Fueled by two school records, multiple event wins and a dominant relay performance, the WPI men's indoor track and field team captured the team title at the Lyons Invitational on Friday evening, hosted by Wheaton College.
WPI topped the seven-team field with 131 points, finishing ahead of Coast Guard (107) and Rhode Island College (63) who made up the top three spots.
The Engineers' night was highlighted by senior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA), who set the program record in the 60-meter dash twice in one evening. Cole first established the school standard in the preliminary round, winning his heat in 6.92 seconds before bettering the mark in the final with a winning time of 6.85. The championship performance ranks 13th nationally in NCAA Division III. Cole's time surpassed the previous WPI school record of 6.96 seconds, set by Matt Adiletta '21 in 2018.
Cole was joined on the podium in the 60 meters by sophomore
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA), who placed second overall in 7.10 as WPI opened the meet with strong sprint performances.
Senior
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) claimed the pole vault title, clearing 4.95 meters. The mark ranks fourth nationally in Division III this season and stands as the fifth-best clearance in WPI history.
WPI added another victory in the relays as the men's 4x200-meter team of Serrecchia, graduate student
Josh Castro (Pittsburgh, PA), junior
Ajay Bellamy (Hamden, CT) and Cole won in 1:32.09. The time is the second-fastest in program history.
Freshman
Aloiye Okhipo (Milford, MA) turned in a standout performance, winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.24 seconds after qualifying first in the prelims. WPI also showed depth in the event as sophomore
Will Fairfax (Dartmouth, MA) placed fifth with a personal-best time of 8.65, while freshman
Brian Stampoulos (Hillsboro, NJ) added a sixth-place finish and a personal best of his own. Okhipo also placed fourth in the 200 meters.
In the middle distances and sprints, Stampoulos won the 400-meter in 51.48 seconds, while sophomore
Theo Burrell (East Haddam, CT) followed with a sixth-place finish. Sophomore
Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) added a runner-up finish and a personal-best time of 52.50 in the 400-meter open.
In the 800 meters, senior
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) captured the event title in 1:55.56, a performance that ranks 30th nationally in Division III. WPI also showed depth in the mile, led by sophomore
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT), who placed second with a personal-best time of 4:25.02. Seniors
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) and
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) followed in third and fifth, respectively, with Skerry also recording a personal best. Sophomore
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) and sophomore
Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY) rounded out the Engineers' top-five finishes.
Junior
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) won both the shot put and weight throw with marks of 14.54 meters and 16.60 meters, respectively. Sophomore
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) placed second in the shot put, while junior
Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) added a top-six finish in the weight throw.
In the jumps, sophomore
Ethan Ramirez (Burlington, CT) recorded two top-six finishes, placing fourth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.
Wrapping up the meet with 4x400 mixed relay action, two Engineers squads nabbed top five finishes.
Sabrina Cady (Lowell, MA),
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT),
Samantha Alley (Randolph, NJ), and Sobelman finished fourth in 3:55.82, while
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY),
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA),
Lexie Abrams (Lowell, MA), and Mosher took fifth in 3:56.06.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, January 31, at the BU Terrier Classic in Boston, Massachusetts.
