Balanced Offense Shines and Defense Flexes in Women’s Basketball 55-41 Win over Emerson

WORCESTER --- WPI Women's Basketball outscored visiting Emerson with four players reaching double-digits en route 55-41 NEWMAC victory inside Harrington Auditorium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, WPI snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 11-8 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC action. Emerson drops to 12-7 and 3-2 in conference play.

Prior to the contest, the Crimson and Gray honored former long-time assistant coach Maegan Cook. At halftime, the program recognized the 2015-16 team that secured the 2016 NEWMAC title and members of the team that made three consecutive NEWMAC Championship appearances.

Megan Stone (Hanson, MA) erupted with eight first quarter points to get the Engineers rolling as Emmy Allyn (Rutland, MA) and Ava Hyams (Kearny, NJ) tacked on buckets of their own. As the first quarter came to a close Femke Jansen (North Granby, CT) knocked in a three to put WPI ahead 18-17.

The visiting Lions responded with a three and pair of good free throws from Jessie Silk (Newton, MA) to take the lead at 23-20 early in the second quarter. WPI then converted on its next seven of eight possession highlighted by threes from Allison Fullem (Underhill, VT) and Hyams and featuring layups from Allyn and Ava Giansiracusa (Whethersfield, CT) to a 36-28 lead with 2:43 remaining in the first half. Allyn and Fullem knocked down late free throws to take a 39-28 lead heading into the intermission as the Engineers connected on 15-of-31 shots from the field as the visitors stayed within reach shooting 40% from the floor.

Emerson briefly steadied in the third, but WPI kept the pressure on and stretched the margin again early in the fourth. Giansiracusa knocked down a key three and Stone followed with a layup to push the lead to 55–37 with just over seven minutes remaining. The Lions scored the final four points, but the Engineers' defense held on to close out the 55-41 victory.

For WPI Hyams led all scorers with 12 points while adding seven rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Giansiracusa, Stone and Allyn finished with 10 points apiece on the afternoon.  Emerson was paced by Bri Frongillo (Hopedale, MA), who scored 11 points and added six rebounds. Silk also finished with 11 points for the Lions and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Both teams return to play on Wednesday night at 7pm as WPI turns to Mount Holyoke on the road and Emerson hosts Babson.
