Cambridge, MA --- The WPI men's swimming and diving team delivered a strong showing Friday night on day two of the 2026 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Center Pool.
WPI has 298.5 total points and sits in third place overall. MIT leads the championship with 524.5 points, followed by Coast Guard with 364. Babson is fourth with 279, Wheaton fifth with 234, Springfield sixth with 215, and Clark seventh with 126.
The Engineers were highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The "A" team of junior
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD), sophomore
Nicholas Braun (Portland, OR), sophomore
Angelo Reade (Newburgh, NY), and junior
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) clocked a 1:22.56 in the championship final after entering with a 1:25.21 prelim time. Doubek led off in 20.88, followed by Braun at 20.69, Reade at 20.37, and Tesoro anchoring in 20.62.
WPI also placed ninth in the 200 free relay "B" final, as freshman
Kyle Sundberg (East Northport, NY), sophomore
Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA), junior
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA), and senior
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) combined for a 1:25.21.
In the 200-yard IM, Smith earned a seventh-place finish in the championship final with a time of 1:52.50 after posting a 1:53.38 in the morning session. Freshman
Deion Chung (Honolulu, HI) placed 17th in 1:56.85, while sophomore
Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR) took 19th in 1:57.30 after both advanced to the B final.
Doubek added an eighth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 20.87 after qualifying with a 20.93. Tesoro placed 13th in 21.09, Reade finished 15th in 21.24, Braun was 17th in 21.52, and Ahluwalia tied for 18th in 21.70.
WPI saw five swimmers score in the 500-yard freestyle. Senior
Gavin McCullough (Colorado Springs, CO) led the group with an 11th-place finish in 4:42.06. Freshman
Kuba Latawiec (Newington, CT) was 13th in 4:43.59, freshman
Lucas Brown (Viera, FL) finished 15th in 4:46.55, senior
Samuel Witscher (Portland, OR) placed 19th in 4:56.00, and junior
Luke Sperling (Downingtown, PA) rounded out the scoring in 20th at 4:58.67.
Closing the evening on a high note, the 400-yard medley relay team earned a fourth-place finish in the championship final. The quartet of Doubek, freshman
Luke Vipond (Mahtomedi, MN), Smith, and Schlessman combined for a 3:23.09.
Competition continues Saturday with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay, and the 1-meter diving event.
