WORCESTER -- Visiting MIT used a 15-hit effort, including three home runs, to pull away from WPI for a 14-4 victory on Saturday afternoon at Granger Diamond. The Worcester Engineers move to 9-7 on the season, while MIT improves to 5-10.
For WPI,
Matt Shea (Salem, NH) and
Shane McLaughlin (Brewster, NY) each recorded two hits, while
Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) added a double and an RBI.
Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) drove in a team-high two runs, and
Sascha Stoll (Boise, ID) added an RBI.
Luke Blandino (Eden, NY) took the loss, allowing five runs over two innings.
Andrew Burke (Walpole, MA) and
Alex Hee (Walpole, MA) followed in relief, with Hee surrendering six runs, just one earned, in the fourth inning.
Robert Runge (Manasquan, NJ) was effective late, tossing three scoreless innings.
MIT's offense was powered by
Dalton Chi (Cerritos, CA),
Jack Finnegan (Essex, CT) and
Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel), who combined for eight hits and six RBI in the win. Chi went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI, while Finnegan reached base four times and drove in two. Moore added three hits, including a two-run home run.
Maximo Del Pino (New York, NY) and
Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) also homered as part of a 15-hit attack, while
John Dwyer (Northport, NY) contributed a pair of hits and an RBI and
Owen Malone (Portsmouth, RI) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Matthew Spenner (Darien, CT) earned the win for MIT, allowing four runs on nine hits over five innings while striking out three.
Chase Rubin (Arlington, VA) followed with two scoreless innings of relief, helping hold WPI without a hit over the final three frames.
MIT jumped in front in the first on a sacrifice fly from Malone before breaking the game open in the second inning. Del Pino and Eitan Moore launched back-to-back home runs, and the visitors added three more runs in the frame to take a 5-0 lead.
WPI answered in the second when Stoll delivered an RBI single to score
Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY). The Engineers added two more in the third as Wiberg lined a two-run single up the middle, bringing home Shea and
Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) to cut the deficit to 8-3.
MIT responded with a six-run fourth inning, capitalizing on a pair of WPI errors as five of the six runs were unearned to extend the lead to 14-3.
WPI plated its final run in the fourth when Keblin doubled to left field to score McLaughlin, making it 14-4. The Engineers were held without a hit over the final three innings.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 3:30pm at the New England Baseball Complex. WPI hosts Salve Regina while MIT faces Emerson.
