WORCESTER -- The WPI women's rowing team turned in a competitive performance in the Barbara Grant Donahue Cup on Lake Quinsigamond Saturday, highlighted by a pair of second place finishes against a field that included nationally-ranked Williams. Racing took place in mostly sunny conditions with a 12-14 mph tailwind from the north-northwest, though the second varsity eight began with a floating start due to gusts at the time.
 
In the varsity eight, WPI placed second in 6:54.90, trailing No. 2 Williams (6:36.70) while finishing ahead of Connecticut College (7:00.21), Pacific Lutheran (7:04.50), Clark (7:36.10) and Simmons (8:11.62) in racing for the Barbara Grant Donahue Cup.
 
The second varsity eight also finished second in 6:58.17, behind Williams (6:30.85) and ahead of Connecticut College (7:02.27), Clark (7:38.90) and Pacific Lutheran (7:49.67). The race was contested with a floating start due to the aforementioned gusty conditions.
 
The third varsity eight featured Williams posting a winning time of 7:07.80, followed by Connecticut College in 7:55.43. In a later varsity eight race, Pacific Lutheran recorded a time of 7:14.12 to finish ahead of Mount Holyoke (7:18.97), Mount Holyoke B (7:56.56) and Pacific Lutheran B (8:33.64).
 
The Engineers are back at it Sunday, hosting No. 1 Trinity, No. 4 Wellesley, No. 8 Bates and No. 9 William Smith on Lake Quinsigamond.
