WORCESTER -- The WPI women's rowing team competed against four Pocock CRCA Division III Top 10 programs on Lake Quinsigamond Sunday, with both the varsity eight and second varsity eight advancing through the early morning heats to the l1:30am finals.
In the varsity eight, WPI finished third in its heat in 7:52.30, behind No. 8 Bates (7:37.00) and No. 4 Wellesley (7:43.00) to advance to the grand final. The Engineers went on to place sixth in 7:32.20 against a championship field that included No. 1 Trinity (7:07.20), Bates (7:09.40), Wellesley (7:09.50), No. 9 William Smith (7:13.67) and No. 10 Hamilton (7:26.80).
The second varsity eight also placed third in its heat in 7:54.10 to move on to the grand final. WPI finished sixth in 8:06.50, with Trinity (7:23.60), William Smith (7:30.60), Bates (7:33.20), Hamilton (7:35.00) and Wellesley (7:45.00) rounding out the field.
In the third varsity eight, Bates posted a winning time of 7:29.80, narrowly ahead of Wellesley (7:30.60), Trinity (7:35.70), Hamilton (7:36.60), William Smith (7:38.50) and Trinity's fourth varsity eight (7:48.50). Racing concluded with the varsity four, where Bates recorded a time of 8:24.20 to finish ahead of Wellesley (8:44.20) and Trinity (8:45.20).
The Engineers return to Lake Quinsigamond next Saturday, welcoming Clark, Connecticut College, No. 11 Colby and No. 1 Trinity. Racing is slated to begin in WPI's 10am window.
