WORCESTER -- The WPI men's rowing team delivered a strong showing Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond, highlighted by a victory in the varsity eight to claim the McCarthy/McGee Cup.
It marked a successful defense of the Cup for the Engineers as the Crimson and Gray had reclaimed it last spring and have now won seven of the 10 contested Cups.
The varsity eight captured the cup with a winning time of 6:15.80, finishing ahead of No. 11 Coast Guard (6:20.00), Boston College (6:20.56), Conn College (6:40.14) and UMass (6:58.23). WPI held off Coast Guard by 4.2 seconds and edged Boston College by just .56 seconds for the closest margin of the day.
The second varsity eight added a runner-up finish in 6:24.31, just 1.61 seconds behind Coast Guard (6:22.70) and ahead of Boston College (6:41.22) and Conn College (6:53.73).
WPI posted another victory in the third varsity eight, reaching Regatta Point first in 6:40.84 ahead of Coast Guard (6:50.12), Boston College (6:57.26), Coast Guard's fourth varsity eight (7:06.37) and UMass Novice (7:13.89).
Racing concluded with the varsity four, where WPI A won in 7:26.63 while WPI B placed third in 8:04.50 behind Conn College (7:58.92).
