Women’s Rowing Takes Fourth Overall at NEWMAC Championships

WORCESTER -- The WPI women's rowing team placed fourth overall at the NEWMAC Rowing Championships on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond.

WPI's top finish came in the varsity eight, where the Engineers posted a time of 7:10.29 to place fourth in a tightly contested race. Wellesley captured the event in 6:53.09, with Smith (6:55.29) and Coast Guard (7:09.09) just ahead of WPI in the final standings.
 
In the second varsity eight, WPI again finished fourth, clocking a 7:32.46. Smith won the race in 7:12.50, followed by Wellesley and Coast Guard, as the Engineers remained within striking distance throughout the middle stages of the regatta.
 
The Engineers added another fourth-place showing in the third varsity eight, finishing in 8:09.95. Smith completed a sweep of the remaining varsity races, taking the W3V8 in 7:19.90 and later the fourth varsity eight in 7:42.56, while Wellesley placed second in both events.
 
In the AQ standings, the Engineers were fourth, totaling 30 points. Wellesley claimed the conference title with 43 points, followed closely by Smith (42) and Coast Guard (35).
 
Following the competition, a pair of Engineers were selected for conference honors. Charlotte Bourne (Northampton, MA) and Victoria Serrambana (Glastonbury, CT) represented WPI on the All-NEWMAC Second Team for their performances throughout the season.
 
Wellesley's Mia Saracino (West Kingston, RI) was named Coxswain of the Year, while Smith's Nadia Grinyuk (Scarborough, ME) earned Rower of the Year honors. They were joined on the All-NEWMAC First Team by Coast Guard's Alexis Pape (Richmond, VA) and Kerry Lee (Scituate, MA), Smith's Julia Beyer (Ardmore, PA) and Kathleen Bacigalupi (Saint Paul, MN), and Wellesley's Bronnie Bailey (Portsmouth, RI), Hannah Bates (Fair Haven, NJ), and Lucy Weil (Wilton, CT).

The All-NEWMAC Second Team featured Smith's Maddy Beer (Seattle, WA), Leyna Rogers (Seattle, WA) and Carmella Martone (Williston, VT) of Clark, Katrina Holbrook (St. Paul, MN) and Ava Rawlings (New York, NY) from Mount Holyoke, Simmons' Michaline Becknell (Arlington, VA) and Ivy Maynard (Glastonbury, CT), along with WPI's Bourne and Serrambana.

Coast Guard's Belle Greenshields (Dover, NH) was tabbed Rookie of the Year, and Mount Holyoke's Holbrook received the Laurels of Excellence for the highest cumulative GPA.
 
In the Florence Jope Smith Cup standings, which account for overall team depth, WPI placed fourth with 18 points. Smith captured the cup with 38 points, followed by Wellesley (34) and Coast Guard (24).
 
The Engineers continue their championship stretch next weekend on Lake Quinsigamond, taking part in the New England Rowing Championships, with racing slated to commence at 8am.
