WORCESTER -- The WPI women's rowing team competed Saturday at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond, navigating a deep and nationally competitive field from the morning heats through the afternoon finals.
The Engineers opened the day in the varsity eight with a fourth-place finish in their heat (7:34.644), racing against a lineup that included nationally-ranked crews from Williams, Smith and Wellesley. WPI also saw its second varsity eight place fifth in its morning heat (7:36.896)
In the afternoon session, WPI's varsity eight competed in the petite final, finishing sixth with a time of 7:09.832 against a competitive group that featured Trinity, Wesleyan and Wellesley.
The second varsity eight turned in one of the Engineers' top performances of the day, placing second in the third-level final with a time of 7:32.384, finishing just behind Conn College (7:26.792).
Earlier in the day, the varsity four lineup highlighted WPI's depth, as the second varsity four advanced through the morning heats and placed second in the grand final (8:25.348), while the third varsity four added a third-place finish in its grand final (8:16.906)
The Engineers will take to Lake Quinsigamond Sunday, May 10th for the National Invitational Rowing Championships, where racing gets underway at 8am.
