Ithaca, NY ---
Katie Adiletta (Bolton, MA) scored on a long-range strike in the first half, but Ithaca rallied with a pair of second-half goals ten minutes apart to hand the WPI women's soccer team a 2-1 setback Saturday afternoon at Carp Wood Field.
The Engineers fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Bombers improve to 2-0.
WPI struck first in the 17th minute as Adiletta unleashed a snipe from more than 25 yards out on the left side, finding the upper portion of the net at 16:51 to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
The Engineers carried the advantage into halftime despite Ithaca holding an 11-6 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes. Both teams put two shots on goal in the opening half, with Ithaca goalkeeper
Katrina Varnum (Stoughton, MA) making two saves to keep the Bombers within one.
Ithaca answered in the second half, leveling the contest on a penalty kick by
Zara Nourie (St. Louis, MO) at 70:02. The Bombers then completed the comeback at 80:58 when
Mia Medearis (Alexandria, VA) found the back of the net off an assist from
Ellie Scivetti (Liverpool, NY), giving Ithaca its first lead of the afternoon.
WPI continued to battle for the equalizer, but Varnum made two saves in the second half to preserve the victory. The Engineers finished with five shots on goal, while Ithaca had four.
Ayla Verheul (Naarden, The Netherlands) made two saves in goal for WPI. The host Bombers finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sarah Frye (Nashua, NH) led the Crimson and Gray with three shots, including a pair on goal. Adiletta and
Eleni Pantzer (Indianapolis, IN) each added two shots.
WPI returns to action Sunday, wrapping up its two-day trip to Central New York with a noon matchup at Cortland.
