There have been many great quarterbacks in WPI football annals.
But one can build a strong case that David Ceppetelli is the
greatest of them all.
The WPI record book supports that statement. In the fall of
1992, when WPI went 9-2 as a team, won the Freedom Football
Conference title with a 5-0 record, and made the NCAA playoff, Dave
passed for 1,868 yards and 9 TDs, good for a .527 completion
percentage. That season, he was named First Team All-New England.
In 1991, a year in which WPI made it to the ECAC playoffs, Dave
passed for an additional 1,944 yards, still fourth best in WPI
single-season history. In 1990, he passed for 1,729 yards, still
seventh best today.
As for career passing marks, Dave's name graces the record book
even further-he is WPI's all-time leader in passing yards with
5,541, in completions with 416, in total offense with 5,434 yards,
and in touchdown passes with 36. He is second in passing attempts
with 756.
Even today, Dave is highly ranked within New England Division
III circles. He is still ranked eighth in New England with those 5,
541 passing yards. And he is currently tenth in New England with
the excellent quarterback rating of 120.97.
Perhaps no one else has won the prestigious Gold Helmet Award
thee straight years-and against the same team. But Dave Ceppetelli
did-in 1990, 1991, and 1992, versus Worcester State.
He is also considered the winningest quarterback in WPI history.
No four-year period can match that of his team's seasons, all under
head coach Jack Siedlecki.
Today, Dave works in environmental engineering and construction
services for Metcalf & Eddy, Inc. in Wakefield, Massachusetts.
He resides in Webster with his wife, Carley, and their two
children, Peyton and Ella.
For his leadership, his winning efforts, and his truly
outstanding athletic career, it is an honor to induct Dave
Ceppetelli into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
