Worcester, MA --- WPI Softball began its home schedule this afternoon, taking both games of a doubleheader against Anna Maria, 8-0 and 3-0. The wins lifted the Engineers' record to 4-8 on the 2009 season, while the AMCATS fell to 1-11.

In the opener, Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) and Lindsay Brown (Westfield, NJ) combined to pitch five shutout innings, surrendering only three hits to Anna Maria. The Engineers jumped out in front quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The key hit of the WPI rally came on a two-RBI single from catcher Sara Migdal (Galway, NY).

WPI built upon its 3-0 lead in the second, getting a two-RBI triple from Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) that staked Flaherty to a 5-0 lead after two. The Engineers would add three more in the fourth, keyed by a two-run blast from Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH), her second home run of the season.

Flaherty earned her second win of the year in game one, improving her mark to 2-2. Migdal was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, while Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY) was 2-for-2 with 2 runs in the first game. Kaylyn Button (Ontario, NY) also scored two runs for the Engineers in the opener.

In game two, Allie Hardy (Townsend, MA) and Brown combined to pitch WPI's second three-hit shutout of the day. Hardy struck out five over five innings to pick up the win, improving her record to 2-3 on the season. Brown pitched two hitless frames to close out the game, earning her first career save in the process.

The Engineers scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings of game two to back Hardy. Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) was perfect at the plate for WPI in the late game, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Foley accounted for three of WPI's seven hits in the game.

Richards was 2-for-3 in game two, and for the second game of the day had the big hit for the Engineers. The senior catcher laced a leadoff homer in the fifth inning for her third homer of the year, leading WPI to the 3-0 game one win.

Alyssa Boykin (Worcester, MA) collected a hit in both games for the visiting AMCATS.

WPI Softball will return to the field next Wednesday March 25th, taking on Amherst (7-2) at home at 4:30pm.
