Worcester, MA --- Visiting Babson plated seven runs over the
first four innings and didn't look back, en route to a 7-2 win in
game one of a season-finale NEWMAC doubleheader at WPI's Alumni
Field on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers also won game two, 4-2, to
move to 21-13 on the year and 11-5 in the conference. Babson will
be the #3 seed in this week's 2010 NEWMAC Tournament while WPI,
which fell to 15-20 (4-12 NEWMAC), saw its season come to a close
with the losses.
Babson got on the board immediately in the opener, as leadoff
hitter Jaclyn Enos (Taunton, MA) started the game
with a single and scored on a Jessica Pashos
(Winchester, MA) RBI double to right. Pashos later scored on an
error as the visitors were up 2-0 after a half-inning. Enos and
Pashos struck again in the third, with Enos leading off the inning
with an infield hit, stealing second and scoring on a Pashos RBI
base hit up the middle. Beavers first baseman Jess
Winer (Longmeadow, MA) followed with a single to plate
Pashos and put Babson up 4-0. Pashos delivered another single to
center in the fourth, a two-RBI hit that was the key hit in a
three-run inning. Catcher Nicole Latini's (East
Bridgewater, MA) run-scoring double scored Pashos for a 7-0 Beavers
lead.
WPI got two runs back in the seventh, thanks to a Meg
Foley (Belchertown, MA) leadoff single and a two-run blast
off the bat of freshman catcher Erin Beaulieu
(Bethany, CT), her second home run of the season. Kelly
Johnson (Buxton, ME) and Katherine Fitton
(Lebanon, CT) picked up the Engineers' two other hits in the
opener, both singles.
Danielle Liska (Seymour, CT) went all the way
for Babson on her way to the win. Liska (9-5) struck out 10
Engineers to pick up the victory, allowing just two earned runs on
four base hits. The Beavers were potent at the top of the order, as
Enos went 3-for-3 with three runs and two stolen bases, Pashos was
3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs and Latini and Winer each had
2-for-4 games with an RBI each.
In game two, Babson scored four times in the fifth to take the
4-2 victory and complete the sweep. The Beavers scored their first
run on an Ashleigh Phelps (West Chester, PA) RBI
single and the rest on a three-run homer off the bat of freshman
shortstop Catie Funk (Scarborough, ME). The blast
was Funk's fourth of the season. Funk, Phelps and Lisa
Wojnar (Bellaire, TX) paced the Babson attack, the latter
two each going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Engineers cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the
sixth. Beaulieu singled and Amanda Martori
(Haverhill, MA) reached on a fielder's choice before Johnson's
two-out double scored both runners and made the score 4-2. Johnson
was 2-for-4 in her final game at WPI, and finished the season
leading the Crimson and Gray in hitting (.333), home runs (4), RBI
(17), walks (14) and slugging percentage (.509). Foley, a fellow
senior, also had two hits in the finale, finishing her final
campaign hitting .278. Martori also wrapped up her
senior season on Sunday with a hit, a run and a walk.
Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, NJ) picked up the
win for Babson, tossing a complete game. Brain (9-4) didn't allow
an earned run and scattered nine hits. She walked three and struck
out six.
Babson will open up Tournament play on Wednesday versus
sixth-seeded Wheaton in a game at second-seeded Springfield.
