Boynton Leads Softball Past Amherst 2-1

Worcester, MA --- WPI's Katrina Boynton (Ballston Lake, NY) used a run-producing-single in the fourth inning to drive in the game-winning run as the Engineers downed Amherst 2-1 in a non-conference softball matchup on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, WPI improves to 14-7, while Amherst evens it's mark at 7-7.

The hosts scored in the first with Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) crossing home plate after reaching on a single and progressing on the base paths following an Amherst miscue.

Amherst responded in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Carolyn Miller (Leominster, MA) singled, stole second and made it to third on an error. Annemarie Iker (Mill Valley, CA) singled up the middle to bring Miller home.

Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) walked in the fourth for WPI and, with assistance from Sarah Johnson's (Eastham, MA) single, moved into scoring position. Boynton then connected on a 1-2 pitch to drive in DiFelice for the go-ahead run.

Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) (5-1) picks up her second win as many days as she sprinkled five hits over five innings and gave up an unearned run. Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) threw two scoreless innings of relief for her first save of the season.

Amherst's Theresa Kelly (Los Angeles, CA) (4-5) went the distance and struck out 10 in the loss while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. Iker finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Lord Jeffs.

Both teams return to action on Friday - weather permitting - with conference home contests.  WPI hosts Clark in a NEWMAC twinbill beginning at 3pm while Amherst entertains Hamilton at 5pm in a single game.
