WORCESTER -- The No. 22 WPI softball team swept a NEWMAC doubleheader from Coast Guard on Saturday at Rooftop Field, taking game one 10-5 before completing the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two. The Engineers improve to 23-1 (9-1 NEWMAC), while the Bears move to 12-10 (6-4 NEWMAC).

WPI totaled 14 runs on 20 hits across the two games while celebrating Alumni Day, highlighted by a pregame recognition of the 2016 NEWMAC Championship team.

Game One
WPI used a five-run first inning to set the tone in a 10-5 victory in the opener.
Â
Stella Kozak (Auburn, NH) led the Engineers with a 4-for-4 performance, while
Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, MA) added two hits and two RBI.
Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, MA) chipped in two hits and three RBI, and
Riley O'Brien (Wynantskill, NY) recorded two hits and an RBI.
Ariana Kreuzer (Walpole, MA) added a double and drove in a run.

Abby Merchant (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) earned the win, tossing a complete game while allowing five runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts.

Coast Guard was paced by
Abriana Schmutz (Marysville, OH), who went 3-for-3 with a triple, while
Dana Walker (Macon, GA) drove in two runs with a double.
Emma Behel (Ellicott City, MD) took the loss.

After Coast Guard opened the scoring in the first, WPI answered immediately with five runs in the bottom half. Fairbairn and
Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) each delivered RBI singles before
Ali Chalovich (Pittsburgh, PA) drew a bases-loaded walk and Sherwood followed with a two-run single to give the Engineers a 5-1 lead.

WPI added two more runs in the third on an RBI double from Kreuzer and an RBI single by Sherwood.

Coast Guard pulled within two in the fifth with three runs, but the Engineers responded in the sixth as Fairbairn, O'Brien, and Kozak each delivered RBI doubles to extend the lead to 10-5.

Game Two
The Engineers used timely hitting and strong pitching to complete the sweep with a 4-1 win.

Chalovich led the offense with two RBI, while Nagy added a two-run single in the decisive fourth inning. Kozak and Fairbairn each added runs scored.

Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, MA) nabbed the win, allowing one run on five hits.
Â
Coast Guard was led by Behel, who drove in the Bears' lone run with an RBI single.
Dana Walker (Macon, GA) took the loss in the circle.

After Coast Guard struck first in the third, WPI responded in the fourth with three runs. Nagy delivered a two-run single before Chalovich followed with an RBI single to give the Engineers the lead for good.

Chalovich added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double to extend the advantage to 4-1.

WPI returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Hartford beginning at 3:30 pm. Coast Guard hosts Emerson for a NEWMAC doubleheader on April 17.
