Softball Sweeps Becker in 2015 Rooftop Field Opener

Worcester, MA --- Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) batted 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored in game one and Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in game two as WPI swept Becker 10-1 and 9-0 in a pair of five inning non-conference softball games on Rooftop Field Tuesday evening.

The Engineers (10-4), who were the guests on the scoreboard, plated a pair of runs in the top of the first of the opener when Biney singled up the middle to plate Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA). The local product scored on a ground out later in the frame.

WPI collected four more runs in the second. Julia Ring (Leominster, MA) began the outburst with an RBI ground out and Murphy-Cook followed with a run-producing single. Biney pushed Murphy-Cook home with another hit and came around to score on the play thanks to an outfield miscue.

Murphy-Cook delivered a sacrifice fly and Biney used her triple to plate two more in the third. Becker (4-7) broke through in the bottom of the third when Megan Bolduc (Dover, NH) drove in Jaclyn Orangio (Maynard, MA) with a single to the outfield. Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) capped the Engineers scoring with a double in the top of the fourth.

Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) (2-for-3) was the only other student-athlete from either team to record multiple hits in the game.

Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) (6-1) allowed three hits and struck out seven in three innings of work. Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) surrendered only one hit and added three strikeouts the rest of the way. Kelsey Norberg (Uxbridge, MA) (1-5) struck out two in the complete-game effort for Becker.

The second game remained scoreless until Murphy-Cook raced home on an overthrow in the top of the third. Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA) continued the scoring with an RBI hit. RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) singled to right field to help plate the third run of the frame while Becker's Jennifer Boxell (Marlborough, MA) gunned down a runner at the plate to prevent another Engineer run and, in the process, end the half inning.

WPI pushed out to an 8-0 lead with a five run fourth inning on four consecutive hits. Murphy-Cook used an RBI single up the middle, followed by a 2-RBI single by Biney. Gallagher and Bumila chipped in with back-to-back RBI doubles. Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) led off the fifth with her first collegiate home run.

Murphy-Cook, Biney and Bumila also had a pair of hits in the nightcap.

Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ) (1-1) allowed two hits and struck out four in the first three innings while Saucier fanned six in the balance of the contest. Samantha Lee (Prospect, CT) (4-2) struck out three in the complete game for Becker.

The Engineers jump back into NEWMAC play when Springfield comes to Rooftop Field for a 4pm doubleheader tomorrow. Becker travels to Lesley for a noon NECC set on Saturday.
