Softball Powers Past Plymouth State and Bethel (MN) in Florida Finales

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, FL --- The WPI softball team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 7-5 triumph over Bethel (MN) and an 11-0 (5 inn.) decision against Plymouth State Saturday at the NTC Spring Games.

The Engineers, who are off until March 22, return to New England with an 8-2 record. Bethel moves to 2-3 and Plymouth State evens out at 1-1.

After Bethel posted a pair of runs in the top of the first in the form of a home run, WPI strung together five runs. Junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) delivered an RBI single to center while classmate Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) sent a 2-RBI double to right center. Senior Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, MA) pitched in with a fielder's choice and was later out on a delayed double steal that allowed Gallagher to cross home plate. Bethel used a three-run blast to even it at 5-5 in the middle of the third. DiTroia doubled in the final two runs of the game in the home half of the stanza.

Junior Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ) allowed four hits and struck out five in a scoreless 4 2/3. Senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) fanned one in the start for the Crimson and Gray. Gurska accounted for two of the Engineers nine hits as Gallagher and DiTroia each added a double and sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) chipped in with a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and Murphy-Cook added a stolen base to their season totals.

The Engineers burst out of the gate with a five spot in the first against Plymouth State as sophomore RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) collected two of the five RBI on a single up the middle. Gallagher's RBI double highlighted a three-run second before Biney homered in the third. Freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) capped her first trip with a 2-RBI double to left in the top of the fifth.

Biney went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored while Murphy-Cook batted 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Wood (double) finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs and May was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) allowed only two hits and two walks and struck out six in her second win of the season. Biney and Murphy-Cook also swiped a pair of bases each to go along with one from Wood.

WPI heads to Fitchburg State on March 22 for a 3pm twinbill while Bethel was set to face Wittenburg at 11am and Plymouth State defeated Western New England 6-5 in their second game of the day.
