Box Score 2 Amherst, MA --- Visiting WPI rallied from a 3-2 deficit with two runs in the fifth and an insurance tally in the seventh to earn a doubleheader spilt by taking the nightcap from Amherst 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The hosts opened the day with a 2-1 win in the opener.
The game two victory provided Engineer head coach Whitney Goldstein her 100th career win while sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) reached the 100 career hit milestone in game one.
In the night cap, WPI didn't waste any time to get on the board, using a walk, a hit and pair of stolen bases to g two runs on RBI groundouts by Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) and Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) in the first inning before Amherst answered back with a mirroring two runs in the bottom half to even the score.
After two scoreless innings, WPI scored a run on a Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) single in the fourth before the Purple & White answered back again with two runs in the fifth to take their only lead of the game.
The Engineers would score one more run in the fourth before Amherst took their only lead of the game in the fifth, scoring two runs to make it a 4-3 game. In the top of the sixth, WPI scored two more runs and never looked back, notching an insurance run in the seventh to clinch the victory.
The Crimson and Gray had a break-out sixth inning that scored the tying run and the game-winner. RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) led off the top of the inning with a single before Julia Veitch (Carlisle, MA) moved her over on a fielder's choice. Shevchuk notched a triple to right-center in the next at bat that scored the tying run before Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, MA) hit a single that scored the game-winning run for the Engineers. May plated Gallagher with a run-producing double to add insurance in the seventh.
Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) allowed just one earned run in 4 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win to move to 4-1 on the year. Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) tossed two shutout innings to post her first save of the season and sixth of her career. May had three hits while Shevchuk notched two and Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) reached base in all four of her plate appearances.
In game one Sara Buck (Hawaii Kai, HI) led off the second inning with her first collegiate homerun to give the Purple & White the advantage. Buck would go on to pace the Amherst offense in game one, going 2-for-3 and adding a double.
The Engineers would make it a 1-1 contest in the top of the third, with Gallagher taking advantage of an Amherst throwing error earlier in the inning and doubling to score Nina Murphy-Cook.
Julia Turner (Kirkland, WA) would go on to tag all four bases and score the game-winning run after a leadoff single in the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Turner took advantage of a WPI pass ball followed by wild pitch to cross home plate.
The Engineers led off the seventh with a walk but Buck caught the runner stealing before Lorena Ukanwa (Morgan Hill, CA) closed out the inning with two strikeouts to earn the win in the circle. Murphy-Cook had two hits for WPI while Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) (5-1) was a tough-luck loser in the circle, allowing two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
WPI (12-4) is back in action Thursday with a 5pm home NEWMAC doubleheader against Springfield. The twinbill was moved from Friday due to the threat of poor weather. Amherst (9-4) kicks off NESCAC play Friday by beginning a three-game home series with Middlebury at 4pm.
