Marcantoni Nets Fourth Goal but WPI Men's Soccer Drops Dual with Nationally-Ranked Babson

Box Score

WORCESTER -- The WPI men's soccer team fell on Saturday afternoon to Babson at H.Carr Field, 3-1. Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) came away with the lone Engineer goal of the game while Babson remained undefeated in NEWMAC play with the win.

WPI (5-4-4, 1-2-2 NEWMAC) was able to rally off 18 shots on the day, with just six of them coming on goal. Babson (9-3-2, 5-0) took just six shots on goal on the day, finding the back of the net on half of them.

Babson got on the board first in the 11th minute of action when Mitchell Collins (Burlington, MA) and Joao Araujo (Boca Raton, FL) teamed up for the first goal of the game and Collins' second of the season. A long pass from Araujo found the foot of Collins who placed it in the near side of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.

After a long stretch of nothing by either team, Babson netted another goal for the Beavers with a 31st minute goal from Liam Hanlon (Boxborough, MA). Hanlon scooped up the rebound of a Ryan Kim (San Ramon, CA) shot to pick up his first goal of the year and give Babson a 2-0 lead.

Marcantoni got WPI on the board in the 35th minute of action with his fourth goal of the season. Matthew McLellan (Hopedale, MA) sent a through ball up to Marcantoni who tapped a shot past the keeper for the score to make it a 2-1 game at the half.

Babson added an insurance goal in the 79th minute of action when Collins netted his second goal of the game off of a free kick from just outside the box that snuck inside the right post.

WPI netminder Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) finished with a pair of stops on the day while the Evan Hallberg (Glocester, RI) registered a team save. Walker White (Coral Gables, FL) halted four of the six shots headed at net while Liam Hanlon (Boxboro, MA) also made a team save in the outing.

WPI is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in its penultimate non-conference match of the season against Middlebury at 7pm while Babson will head to Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday at 3pm.
