Martenson Plays Hero with Late Goal as Men's Soccer Outlasts Emerson 2-1

Box Score

Boston, MA --- Christopher Martenson (Westport, CT) was the hero of the day as his goal in the 88th minute of action helped the WPI men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Emerson College on Saturday, spoiling the Lions Senior Day outing.

The goal was the first of Martenson's career, coming in his 46th game of action with the Engineers.   It came following a free kick taken by Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) and Martenson knocked it in on an ensuing rebound.

WPI (6-4-5, 2-2-2 NEWMAC) is now in a tie for fourth place in the NEWMAC standings with Coast Guard with eight points while Emerson (9-2-5, 3-2-1) remains in third with 10 points with one week left in the regular season.  Next Saturday WPI hosts second place MIT while Emerson and Coast Guard square off in New London.  Wheaton (at Clark) and Springfield (at Babson) are tied for sixth with six point each.  The top five teams qualifier for the NEWMAC Tournament.

Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) got things going very early on for WPI putting the Engineers on the board in the fourth minute of action. Mike Biando (Duluth, GA) got the action going with the first shot on goal of the day just a couple of minutes in and less than a minute later Savoie hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Gregory Kopanezos (Atlanta, GA) evened the score in the 24th minute of play after finding WPI netminder Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) off line, he went around and snuck one in with some help from Aaron Tyler (South Pasadena, CA) to make it one-all.

Both teams had a few chances as the first half wound down, but headed into the intermission even at one.

WPI began the second half off with a corner kick and a couple of good chances as Emerson was able to keep the Engineers off the board with a team save. The offensive barrage continued early on in the second half and picked up again in the 80th minute of action as Savoie turned on the jets.

A yellow card from Emerson was called seconds before Martenson booted the game-winning shot.

Hendrick finished the outing with six saves while Emerson goalie Ethan Fitzsimmons (Harvard, MA) picked up seven saves, facing 19 shots on the day.

The Engineers are back in action with their final non-conference game of the season when they host UMass Boston on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7pm. Emerson returns to the field in its regular season finale at Coast Guard at Noon on Saturday, Oct. 29.
