Guilfoyle Nabs All-Conference Honors as Women's XC Takes Fourth at NEWMACs

Attleboro, MA --- The WPI women's cross country team recorded a fourth-place finish at the 2022 NEWMAC Championships hosted by Wheaton College at Highland Park on Saturday. The Engineers were led by All-Conference performer, junior Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY). 

Guilfoyle took the last All-NEWMAC spot, placing 17th overall in a time of 23:08.9 to earn her first career conference accolade. Graduate student Amelia Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) narrowly missed the All-Conference team, placing 18th overall, crossing the finish line in 23:11.7. 

As a team, WPI improved on last season's fifth-place finish, recording 113 team points. #6 MIT, led by individual champion Gillian Roeder (21:53.4, captured the title for the 15th-straight season, notching a winning score of 30. #27 Smith took runner-up honors with 62 points, followed by Coast Guard in third with 97 points. After WPI, Wellesley scored 145 to round out the top five. 

Overall, the Engineers saw all nine runners finish in the top 50 of the 129-runner field. After Guilfoyle and Kokernak, senior Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC) was third across the line in the 6k for WPI, taking 25th place in 23:33.4. 

Senior Lora Dufresne (Sutton, MA) was next, placing 31st in a time of 23:51.6, while senior Kaylee Gladu (Woonsocket, RI) and freshman Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) crossed back-to-back, going 24:04.9 and 24:06.3 to finish 34th and 35th overall.

Senior Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) took 41st place in a time of 24:18.8, followed by freshman Beth Irwin (Guilderland, NY) and graduate student Nicole Whipkey (Portland, ME). Irwin took 45th place in 24:24.7 while Whipkey was 47th in 24:42.0 to round out the WPI runners. 

The Engineers will now move on to compete at the NCAA Division III East Region Championship on Saturday, November 12. The event is hosted in Brunswick, ME by Bowdoin College, with the women's race kicking off at 11am.
