Vaz and Marcantoni Tally Multiple Points Men's Soccer Upends Clark

WORCESTER -- A second half onslaught resulted in a 4-0 victory for the WPI men's soccer team over Clark on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.  

Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) got the scoring going in the 51st minute of action, Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) piled on a pair of goals down the stretch, and Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) saved all six shots that he faced en route to the victory.  

The Engineers (5-3-4, 1-1-2 NEWMAC) picked up their first conference victory of the year with the win while Clark (2-10-1, 0-4) remained winless in NEWMAC action.  

Prior to the game, WPI honored is seven seniors in a pregame ceremony. Those recognized included Hendrick, Walter Rodriguez (Bayamon, PR), Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA), Luke Reid (Kingston, MA), Matthew Dzwil (Boxboro, MA), Franco Bazzini (San Juan, PR) and Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA).

Vaz' goal, his fourth of the year, came via a penalty kick to which he is now 2-for-2 on the year. His shot hit off of the left post and into the back of the net for the ultimate game-winner.  

In the 63rd minute, Vaz and Mason Perham (Hampden. MA) set up Savoie for the score. After Perham's throw-in, Vaz sent a cross to Savoie who found the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead.  

Marcantoni got going in the final 10 minutes of action. First after collecting the ball and sending a shot right into the middle of the net in the 81st minute, Mercantoni followed up with another goal less than four minutes later with some help from Matthew McLellan (Hopedale, MA). McLellan drew out the Clark goalie, crossed to Marcantoni on the right side who netted the fourth and final goal of the day in the 85th minute.  

WPI finished with 26 shots on the day, seven of which on goal. Clark netminder Andrew DiStefano (West Chester, PA) finished with three saves on the day.  

WPI is back in action next Saturday, Oct. 15 when the team plays host to Babson at 3 pm while Clark returns to the pitch Wednesday afternoon against Tufts at 4 pm in non-conference action.
