Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) triple-double, the WPI volleyball team grabbed a 3-1 NEWMAC victory over visiting Mount Holyoke, 25-7, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, on Tuesday night at Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers improve to 7-11 overall, 3-5 in conference play, while the Lyons dip to 8-12, 1-7.
Reynolds racked up totals of 12 kills, 17 assists, and 14 digs, also adding five blocks, to grab her fifth triple-double of the season and sixth of her career.
Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) notched a 10-kill night, while
Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) had seven kills and eight digs.
Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) finished with five kills and five blocks, while
Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) led the Engineers with 18 assists. Defensively,
Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) recorded 19 digs, while
Alana Harris (Lowell, MA) added 18.
For Mount Holyoke,
Madeline Barton (Brookfield, WI) tied for match-high honors with 12 kills, adding 14 digs for a double-double.
Lucie Berclaz (Hull, MA) ended her night with nine kills, while
Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, MN) dished out a match-best 25 kills.
Amelia Ringor (Lafayette, IN) and
Kyra Staples (Chatham, IL) rounded out the box score with totals of 24 and 21 digs.
WPI won a lopsided set one, hitting .286 and allowing just two Mount Holyoke kills in the frame. Leading 6-3 early the Engineers rattled off a 10-0 run to set the tone. The Lyons responded with three unanswered points to cut it to 16-7, but that was the last point of the frame for the visitors, as WPI closed the frame on an 8-0 surge to win 25-7.
Mount Holyoke tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 result in the second set. Tied 4-4, the Lyons used a 6-2 surge to take a 10-6 lead. WPI scored the next point, but MHC pushed it to a seven-point advantage at 15-9. The Engineers rallied down the stretch to close the gap to 20-17, but the Lyons pulled out the victory.
WPI regained its match lead with a 25-20 win in the third. Mount Holyoke held a slim advantage through the early action until a 5-1 WPI run put them up 14-12. After the Lyons cut it to one, the Engineers answered with another 5-1 surge to lead 20-15. The Lyons got the lead down to three late, but WPI scored the final two points of the frame to take it.
WPI needed a late fourth set rally to wrap up the match with a tight 25-23 in. Tied six times in the first 14 points, the Engineers made the first move with a 5-2 surge to go up 12-9. Mount Holyoke battled back to tie the frame at 13-13 and then kept the run going to extend it to an 18-13 lead, all-in-all a 9-1 surge. The visitors led by as many as five (18-13), but WPI came all the way back to tie it at 21-21 with an 8-3 run. After a timeout, the Engineers continued to roll, closing out the set on a Reynolds kill to win it.
WPI has a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at Conn College, taking on the Camels at 10:30am and then Rhode Island College at 12:30pm. Mount Holyoke also has a non-conference match coming up, hosting Bay Path on Friday at 6pm.
