Springfield, MA ---
Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) accounted for WPI's lone goal and netminder
Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) collected seven saves as the Engineers went on the road and delivered a 1-1 draw with Springfield in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest on Wednesday evening.
The tie was the Crimson and Gray third straight stalemate and fourth in five matches. WPI is now 6-5-4 on the season and 2-2-4 in conference action. The Engineers have 10 points and are tied with Wellesley for seventh place in the NEWMAC standings with three match days remaining. The two teams are just a point behind Clark and Smith, who are tied for fifth and two points ahead of ninth-place Coast Guard. The top eight teams make the NEWMAC Tournament, which begins in two weeks. Springfield, which appeared in the initial NCAA Division III regional rankings released today, is now 7-4-3 overall and 5-2-1 in NEWMAC play.
Toolin's marker was the only goal of the first half and came in the 28th minute following a free kick.
Jess English's service into the box pin-balled off a couple of Springfield defenders and was collected by Toolin, who knocked in her second goal of the season and sixth of her career at 27:16. The Pride earned the tie with an equalizer midway through the second stanza when
Kate Minoudis (Columbia, CT) buried a feed from
Sonia Dugger (Belchertown, MA) at 63:50.
The Engineers outshot the hosts 18-14 but Springfield held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. SC goalkeeper
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, MA) joined Hellerman with seven saves on the night.
WPI wraps up its brief two-game road trip on Saturday, venturing to No. 9 MIT for a 1pm kickoff. Springfield is also on the road at the same time Saturday, traveling to Wellesley.
