Northampton, MA --- The WPI men's cross country team raced to a second-place finish at the 2023 NEWMAC Championships on Saturday morning at Smith College. The Engineers, ranked fifth in the USTFCCCA East region, earned their ninth straight runner-up finish at the event.
Leading the way for WPI was a pair of repeat All-NEWMAC performances in graduate student
David Reynolds (Andover, NH) and senior
Avi Bissoondial (Millbury, MA). Reynolds took fifth overall in the field of 104 runners, clocking in at 25:16.1. He earned his fourth All-NEWMAC honor, the first in WPI program history to accomplish that feat. Bissoondial repeated as an All-NEWMAC selection, recording a 12th-place finish. He crossed the finish line in 25:55.6.
Overall, WPI had five runners in the top-25 at the event, compiling 56 team points. MIT, the top-ranked team in the region and the third-ranked team in the nation, won the event for the 25th straight year with 20 points. MIT's
Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, NC) took the individual title in 24:49.3.
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) was the next WPI runner across the line, recording a top-20 finish. The sophomore narrowly missed an All-NEWMAC bid, clocking in at 26:29.9 to place 17th. Junior
Sean Corman (Waterford, CT) and
Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) rounded out the top five for the Engineers. Corman was 22nd in a time of 26:51.8 and Fisher was 25th in 27:19.5.
Senior
Jarrett Gulden (Walpole, ME) and sophomore
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) served as pushers with Gulden 27th in 27:26.2 and Wyche 31st in 27:34.6. Junior
Connor Gaudette (Holden, MA) was next for the Engineers, taking 32nd in 27:37.4.
Rounding out the top finishes for WPI were freshmen
Craig Salois (Hopkinton, MA) and
Trip Williams (Pelham, NH), and senior
Zachary Shord (Laurel, MD). Salois took 39th in 28:03.7, Williams was 45th in 28:15.9, and Short took 53rd in 29:02.1.
WPI continues postseason competition at the NCAA Division III East Region Championship, scheduled for Saturday, November 11. The meet will take place in Hopkinton, NH hosted by Suffolk.
