Sollecito and Rauch Connect on a Goal for Field Hockey in Loss at No. 2 Babson

Babson Park, MA --- Seniors Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) and Abigail Rauch (Jackson, NJ) teamed up on a fourth quarter goal for WPI as the Engineers went on the road and dropped a 5-1 decision to nationally-ranked Babson in a NEWMAC field hockey action on Tuesday evening.

The Beavers, ranked second in the most recent Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Top 25, have now won their fifth straight and are 11-1 overall and 4-0 in conference action.  WPI saw its four-game winning streak snapped and now sits at 4-6 on the season and 3-1 in NEWMAC play.

WPI cracked the scoring column with 3:33 remaining in the contest following a penalty corner and a pass from Rauch to Sollecito for her second goal of the season and fourth of her career.  It snapped a streak of four straight shutouts for the Beavers, who had not conceded a goal in 316 minutes and 46 seconds of game action dating back to a 3-2 loss to No.1 and five-time defending national champion Middlebury back on September 17th.

While the hosts held a 20-3 advantage in shots and a slight 6-4 edge in penalty corners, the Crimson and Gray arguably had the better of the play in the fourth quarter when the shots were even at 3-3 and guests were awarded three of the stanza's four corners.

Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) made seven stops in net for WPI while Bayla Furmanek (State College, PA) made a save for the hosts.  Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) and Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) joined Sollecito with shots for the Boynton Hillers.

After a scoreless opening frame, Babson registered goals by Berit Sharrow (Denver, CO) and Camille Marsh (Englewood, CO) in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room at intermission.  Meara Hanyon (Brodheadsville, PA) and Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) were credited with assists on the tallies.  Ashley Braren (Westwood, MA) and Jessica Evans (Southbury, CT) bagged third quarter goals for the Beavers while Marsh added her second marker of the night 5:13 into the final quarter.

The Crimson and Gray play their second of two games this week versus nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday when they welcome No. 22 MIT to H. Carr Field for an 11am matchup.  Babson is also back in action Saturday, entertaining Salve Regina in the middle contest of a three-game homestand.
