Rauch Shines as Field Hockey's Comeback Falls Just Short Versus Nationally-Ranked MIT

WORCESTER -- The WPI field hockey team fell in a hard fought battle, 2-1, against No. 22 MIT on Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field. Abigail Rauch (Jackson, NJ) put her offensive and defensive abilities on display in the outing netting WPI's lone goal of the game while also making a defensive save.

WPI falls to 4-7 on the season and 3-2 in NEWMAC action while No. 22 MIT improves to 9-3 on the year and remains perfect in conference play (5-0).

Paige Forester (Glencoe, IL) put the Boston based Engineers on the board very early on with a goal in the first minute of action. After WPI was able to bust the initial penalty corner scoring try, Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, CA) gathered in the ball after it was poked away by a WPI defender and got it to Forester who was waiting in front of the goal for the score.

Bailey McIntyre (Concord, MA) put MIT up 2-0 in the first quarter with a ninth minute goal. McIntyre stole the ball at midfield from WPI, dribbled through a slew of defenders and just into the circle, taking a long shot at the goal that found the back of the net for the two-goal lead.

Rauch busted the MIT shutout bid in the second half of action taking full advantage of the penalty corner opportunity. Eliza Dutson's (Woodstock, CT) initial shot was deflected, but Rauch was standing right in front of the goal, reading to take the deflection and send it into the net to cut the MIT lead in half in the 39th minute of play, with a period and a half to go.

After showcasing her offensive abilities in the third quarter, Rauch displayed her defensive abilities stepping in and making a defensive save to keep the game at 2-1. After a WPI corner attempt, MIT took the ball and raced down the field. In the circle, Forester was able to draw the WPI netminder out of the net, but Rauch was there to make the save and clear the ball out of the circle.

But MIT would control the offense for the majority of the rest of the game as WPI was unable to get another shot off falling by a goal to the 22nd ranked team in the country.

Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) was tested in net all day, facing 16 shots on goal and making 14 saves, both career highs for the junior. MIT took 24 total shots on the day. Anna Duncan (St. Louis, MO) and Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, MD) split the time in goal. Zimmer saved the two shots that she faced while Duncan made two saves and allowed the lone WPI goal.

The Engineers are back at it next Saturday, October 14 when they head to Norton, MA for a meeting with Wheaton while MIT returns to the field on the same day but at 1:15 at home against Clark.
