WORCESTER --
Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) and
Leah Uglevich (Maynard, MA) netted goals less then two minutes apart in the first quarter to spark third-seeded and host WPI to a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded Wellesley in a NEWMAC Field Hockey Tournament quarterfinal contest on Tuesday evening on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
It was deja vu all over again as it was the same result and score of last's year quarterfinal matchup between the two squads, and like a season ago, the Engineers advance to the semifinals and will venture to second-seeded MIT on Thursday at 6pm in Cambridge.
WPI improves to 10-8 overall while Wellesley sees its season comes to a close with an 8-10 mark.
The hosts received all the scoring they would need in a 1:51 span late in the first quarter. After an
Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) insert off a penalty corner at 7:59,
Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) stick stopped and passed to Sollecito who shot from the top of the circle at 8:08 for her third goal of the season. Less than two minutes later
Lauren Simonian (Farmington, CT) dribbled up the right side and crossed it to Uglevich, who battled with a defender to ultimately knock down her first goal of the season at 9:59.
The Engineers had the better of the play in the first half, accounting for 10 of the 11 shots over the opening 30 minutes and attempting all six first half penalty corners.
The guests came out of the locker room after intermission and controlled the third quarter, outshooting the Crimson and Gray 7-2 in the frame, but unable to dent the scoring column. The Blue received multiple third quarter shots from
Alex Butulis (Raleigh, NC) and
Sara Maniscalco (Manhattan Beach, CA).
The final 15 minutes was evenly matched as both teams registered three shots and were awarded two corners.
Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) tallied a pair of stops in net for WPI while
Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, PA) was credited with two saves for the Blue.
For the game, the Engineers held a 15-11 bulge in shots and a 10-5 edge in corners. Sollecito paced all players with a game-high five shots while
Cassidy Novello (Scotch Plains, NJ) launched four shots for the visitors.
