WORCESTER -- Babson's
Natalie Knauf (Point Pleasant, NJ) notched a goal in the final 10 minutes to help the Beavers rally to defeat host WPI 3-2 in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest played on a beautiful fall evening on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
Babson is 5-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play while the Engineers fall to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in NEWMAC action.
The visitors dented the scoreboard first, just 4:38 into the match on an own goal. Knauf started the scoring sequence by hitting
Cassie Lawson (Millis, MA) with a throw-in towards the left offensive corner. The junior sent a cross towards the WPI goal that deflected off an Engineer defender into the back of the net. The goal was the first conceded by the Crimson and Gray in five games and a span of 389 minutes and 25 seconds dating back to September 19th at Wheaton.
WPI appeared to seize control of the match with a pair of goals 3:18 early in the second half.
Rian Fadden (Leicester, MA) rocketed a shot towards the goal following a corner kick that hit the hand of a Babson defender resulting in a penalty kick.
Madisyn Bagby (Aurora, CO) converted the PK for her third goal of 2023 to even the game at 50:10. The Engineers got another free kick just over 25 yards out and Bagby found a cutting
Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) darting towards the goal. The junior beat the Beaver netminder for her first tally of 2023 and fifth of her career at 53:28.
The visitors leveled the match in the 68th minute when
Morgan Krauss (Belmont, MA) collected a rebound of a shot by
Janiya Ocamp (Pawtucket, RI) and banked it off the right post at 67:04. Knauf then netted the game-winner for the Beavers at 80:17. A long Babson goal kick took the ball past midfield, where it briefly pinballed around and was collected and passed forward by
Laura Lukowicz (Coventry, RI) and one-touched by Ferrantino to Knauf who beat the WPI goalkeeper to the ball and chipped it over her and into the net.
Callahan Cottone (Medway, MA) made six stops in a winning effort for Babson while reigning NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week
Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) was credited with a pair of saves for the Engineers. As a team the Beavers outshot the Crimson and Gray 14-10 and held a slight 5-3 edge in corners.
WPI has a quick turnaround as Clark makes the quick trip up Park Ave. for a 7pm kickoff on Friday evening. Babson wraps up a three-game road trip Saturday as the Beavers head to South Hadley for a 1pm matchup at Mount Holyoke.
