Dutson Scores for Field Hockey but No. 12 Trinity Dodges Upset with Pair of Second Half Tallies

WORCESTER -- Nationally-ranked Trinity posted a pair of second half goals to rally past upset-minded host WPI 2-1 in a non-conference field hockey contest played Tuesday evening on H. Carr Field at Alumni Field in Worcester.

The Bantams, a national semifinalist a season ago and currently ranked 12th in the most recent Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III Top 25, improve to 2-1 on the season while the Engineers slip to 0-5 in 2023.

The first quarter was tightly contested with neither team attempting a penalty corner and the visitors holding a slight 3-2 advantage in shots. WPI was outshot 5-1 in the second quarter but made the most of its only shot.  After Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) was tripped up in the circle, Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) stepped up and buried a penalty stroke with 4:34 to go before intermission.  It was the junior's first goal of the season and 24th of her career, ninth off a penalty stroke.

The visitors pulled even midway through the third quarter when Brooke DiBiase (Chatham, NJ) emerged from a scramble in front of the net as found Jackie Frank (Longmeadow, MA) who netted her first goal of the season at 38:56.  Trinity went ahead 5:40 into the final stanza following a penalty corner.  Kylie Tierney (Garden City, NY) pushed a shot towards the WPI that was redirected by Kylie Winfield (Wilmington, DE) along the far post and into the back of the net for the senior's second marker of 2023.

The Bantams enjoyed an 11-2 bulge in shots after halftime and were awarded 10 of the 11 second half penalty corners.

Olivia McMichael (Glenside, PA) amassed a pair of saves in net while earning the triumph for the visitors.  Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) was outstanding in between the pipes for the Crimson and Gray, registering a career-best 13 stops.

WPI opens NEWMAC play on Saturday, hosting Wellesley in an 11am contest, the opening game of a WPI tripleheader on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.  Trinity has a busy home weekend ahead, entertaining NESCAC rival Colby on Saturday at 11am before welcoming the University of New England to Hartford for a noon matchup on Sunday.
