WORCESTER --
Abigail Rauch (Jackson, NJ) and
Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) each tallied a goal and an assist to provide WPI its first victory of the season as the Engineers kicked off NEWMAC play with 4-0 shutout of visiting Mount Holyoke on Saturday morning.
WPI broke into the win column for the first time is 2023 and is now 1-5 overall and 1-0 in conference action. The Lyons, who saw their modest three-game winning streak snapped, slips to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in NEWMAC play.
In the 20th minute of play,
Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) sent the ball right at the cage, where Rauch knocks it into goal off the tip of her stick at 19:10.
Just three minutes after halftime, Sollecito inserts the ball into play off a penalty corner that was stick-stopped by
Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT), who blasted a powerful shot in goal. In the waning moments of the third quarter, Rauch recovered a loose ball off the goalie's kneepads after a scramble around the goal and fed Sollecito who quickly put it in.
Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) earned her second goal of the season with a shot in the middle of the circle following a pass from
Maggie Usdan (Rumson, NJ) 5:26 into the fourth frame.
Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) earned her his career victory and shutout in net for the Crimson and Gray.
Rachel Katzenberg (Reistertown, MA) reached double digits in saves for the Lyons with 11 stops.
The Engineers were credited with 25 of the game's 26 shots and were awarded all 20 penalty corners attempted on the day. Lang led all players with 10 shots, four being on target while
Jayonna Montigny (Enfield, CT) attempted a shot for the visitors.
WPI is off until next Saturday when they hit the road for the first time in NEWMAC play for a trip down Park Ave to face city foe Clark in a noon start. Mount Holyoke steps of conference for its next contest, venturing to Purchase, NY to square off with Manhattanville on Wednesday at 5pm.
