WORCESTER – WPI field hockey's
Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) and
Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) combined for four goals and three assists leading the Engineers to a 5-1 victory over the hosting Cougars in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams are now 2-5 on the season with the Engineers improving to 2-0 in NEWMAC play while the Cougars fall to 0-2 in conference action.
Clark posted the first tally of the afternoon as
Elizabeth Cacciapaglia (Ridgefield, CT) connected with
Ciaran Cubbage (Fredericksburg, VA) in the 11
th minute for the early lead.
The second quarter featured three goals by three different scorers starting with a dish from Lang to Powers who knocked home the opening goal for the Engineers at 18:27.
Samantha Robison (Wrentham, MA) put the Engineers on top with an unassisted goal at 23:13.
WPI kept the Cougars out of the scoring column for the rest of the contest as Powers punched in her second goal of the day at 25:06 to etch a two-goal first half lead before connecting with Lang two more times in the second stanza at 31:01 and 50:33 for the 5-1 result at the Granger Athletic Complex.
The Boynton Hillers enjoyed a 15-12 advantage in shots and a 10-7 edge in corners as
Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) posted five saves on the afternoon with one goal against as
Loren Roots (Sherborn, MA) logged six saves in the loss to WPI.
WPI begins a two-game homestand on Thursday, welcoming city foe Worcester State to H. Carr Field for a 7pm matchup. Clark is also home in its next contest, tangling with Saint Joseph (CT) on Tuesday at 7pm.
