Another Reynolds Triple-Double as Volleyball Succumbs to Clark in NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER -- The WPI volleyball team dropped a three-set match on the road at Clark, 25-18, 25-18, 31-29, in the NEWMAC opener for both teams on Tuesday. The Engineers dip to 3-6 (0-1) overall, while Clark improves to 8-2 (1-0).

WPI saw yet another Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) triple-double, as the graduate student tallied her third of the season and fourth of her career in the loss. She led the Engineers with 10 kills and 21 assists, adding 11 digs. Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) notched nine kills and six digs, while Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) notched eight kills in the loss. Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) had a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs, with Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) recording 17 digs and Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) adding 13.

For Clark, Sheyenne Williams (Bloomfield, NJ) and Camille Flurry (Athens, GA) combined for 19 kills, while Julia Dopazo (Miami, FL) recorded a double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs. Victoria Pastor (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) led the Cougars with 15 digs and Yumeng Liu (Beijing Shi) added 13 in the winning effort.

WPI got off to a slow start in the first set, hitting at a negative clip, while Clark cruised to the 25-18 win. The Cougars used an early 7-1 run to take command of the match, going up 12-6 before the Engineers battled back to cut it to 12-9. Clark surged ahead with another run, this time 8-1, and WPI couldn't recover as the Cougars went up 1-0 in the match.

The Engineers' offense rebounded in the second set, but Clark hit .333 to post a similar 25-18 set win. The Cougars jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but WPI answered with a 6-2 surge of its own to tie it at 8-8. Clark responded with six unanswered points to go up 14-8 and the Engineers got no closer than a five-point deficit the rest of the way.

The third set was the closest of the night, needing extra points before Clark finally came away with a 31-29 win to seal the 3-0 match sweep. WPI had the early advantage, leading by as many as four points as an Escuer ace made it 13-9. The Cougars came back to tie, but WPI surged ahead again, going up 20-17. Later, three straight WPI points gave the Engineers set point at 24-22, but Clark spoiled a pair to knot the game up at 24-24. The set was tied five more times with three set points being thwarted until at 29-29, the Cougars used a WPI attack error and a Flurry kill to end the marathon frame.

WPI continues the season on Saturday with two at Emerson. The Engineers will play the hosts at 11am and then take on UMass Dartmouth at 1pm. Clark heads to Smith for two also on Saturday, playing the Pioneers at 1pm and then Bowdoin at 3pm.
