Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Marden's First Career Goal Hands Men's Soccer its First NEWMAC Victory of 2023

WORCESTER -- Rookie Eli Marden (Shelburne, VT) netted his first career goal, the lone tally of the game, propelling the WPI men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Emerson College on Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field.

The win was the team's first conference victory of the 2023 campaign as the Engineers improved to 2-3-3 on the year and 1-1 in NEWMAC play with the win. Emerson drops to 4-2-2 in 2023 and 0-1 in conference action.

Matthew Biando (Atlanta GA) started things off with a free-kick 25 yards out sending a crossing shot that made it past everyone in the box until it found the foot of Marden who sent a shot through a defender and past a crossed up goalkeeper for the ultimate game-deciding goal in the 22nd minute of action.

The assist for Biando was his first of the season and just the second of his career.

WPI finished with 15 shots on the day, seven of which came on goal, while Emerson took 14 shots on the day, but just five were on the mark. The Engineers also had the advantage on corners, taking seven on the day to Emerson's two.

Beckett Hobbs (Issaquah, WA) finished with six saves on the day for Emerson allowing the lone goal of the match while Ryan Martin (Douglas, MA) ended the day with a clean sheet, the third time this season he hasn't allowed a goal while in net and his first clean sheet while playing every minute in net. Martin made five saves on the day,

The Engineers return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 6pm when they head into Boston to take on Wentworth in some mid-week, non-conference action. The Lions return home, also for a Tuesday contest, where they will square off against Eastern Nazarene at 6pm.
