Hellerman, Women's Soccer Posts Fourth Straight Shutout as Engineers and Smith Play to Scoreless Draw

Northampton, MA --- After a grueling 90 minutes of action, the WPI women's soccer team came away with a 0-0 tie against Smith on Saturday afternoon.  It marks the second straight season the two squads have played to a scoreless stalemate and the fourth consecutive shutout this season for the Crimson and Gray.

The tie was the first of the season for the Engineers and are now 6-4-1 on the year and 2-1-1 in NEWMAC action while Smith is now 2-3-3 in 2023 and 2-1-1 in conference play.

Smith took the first shot of the game, forcing WPI netminder Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) to make the team's first save in the fifth minute of action. WPI rallied off a pair of shots in the ninth minute of action, the first blocked and the second saved, but Smith controlled the number of scoring attempts in the first half outshooting WPI 7-3 as Hellerman made five first half saves.

WPI dominated the offensive stats in the second half taking all but one of the second half shots, outshooting Smith 6-1. The Engineers had a chance at the very end of the game as Madisyn Bagby (Aurora, CO) roped a shot low center on the net with just 48 seconds remaining, but Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA) kept the sheet clean for Smith en route to the tie.

Hellerman finished with another clean sheet in the tie, making five saves on the day while Smith also allowed no goals and made four saves for the Pioneers.   Hellerman and the Engineers have now gone 384 minutes and 47 seconds without conceding a goal.

The Engineers return back to campus to kick off a three-game homestand when they take on Babson in midweek NEWMAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7pm while Smith remains home also on Wednesday when the Pioneers play host to visiting Clark at 3:30pm.
