WORCESTER -- Visiting Babson tallied three goals in the opening 17:31 to propel the nationally-ranked Beavers to a 3-0 shutout of WPI in a matchup of NEWMAC unbeaten field hockey teams on H. Carr Field on Tuesday evening.
Babson, which it tied for sixth in the most recent National Field Hockey Coach Association Top 25, is now 7-3 on the season and 3-0 in league play. The Beavers have now won 62 consecutive NEWMAC regular season games going back to October of 2015. The Engineers fall to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in NEWMAC action.
Babson fired right out of the gates, netting a pair of goals in the opening 12 minutes. In the seventh minute, Camille Marsh (Englewood, CO) had a nifty reverse-chip inside the circle for her third of the season at 6:30. The host's best chance for a goal came just over a minute later when the Crimson and Gray earned three penalty corners in a 46-second span but were denied a goal despite a pair of shots during the flurry.
Later in the quarter, a pass by Jessica Evans (Southbury, CT) into the crease was tipped back by Katie Guden (Belmont, MA) to Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, MA), who tapped the ball into the back of the net for her eighth of the year at 11:58.
The Beavers would strike again early into the third quarter when Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, PA) lasered a ball into the circle and was redirected by Evans past the WPI netminder for her first marker of the season, lifting the Beavers to 3-0 advantage.
The two squads settled in defensively in the second half with neither team able to dent the scoring column over the final 30 minutes.
Bayla Furmanek (State College, PA) was credited with one save while moving into solo possession all-time in Babson history in goalkeeper win. The shutout was her school record-extending 27th clean sheet. Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) had his first career start in net for the Engineers, making one stop while Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) notched seven saves in 45 minutes of relief.
The guests finished with a 21-3 bulge in shots and attempted the game's final 12 penalty corners after WPI was awarded the aforementioned first three in the opening quarter. Eve Martineau (Greene, ME), Leah Uglevich (Maynard, MA) and Ella Reeners (Windham, NH) accounted for the Crimson and Gray's three shots.
WPI travels to Springfield for a conference matchup on Saturday at 4pm. Babson returns home to face off against Smith in a NEWMAC contest on Saturday at 12pm.
