Castine, ME ---
Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) and
Tora Ito (Hopkinton, MA) both registered a goal and an assist as the WPI men's soccer team closed out its non-conference regular season schedule with a comprehensive 4-0 shutout of host Maine Maritime on Wednesday afternoon.
WPI, which is unbeaten in its last seven matches (3-0-4) and sits third in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division III Region II rankings, lifts its record to 8-2-4 on the season, while the Mariners fall to 5-7-1.
The Crimson and Gray saw an eventful first half, converting three goals off 11 total shots. Vaz started the action for the Engineers in the 20th minute. A corner kick by
Anthony Previte (Andover, MA) landed at the foot of a defender, but Vaz secured the ball and nailed the shot for his sixth goal of the season at 19:24.
At 26:56, a cross by WPI's Vaz into the box set up Ito for a nifty tap-in goal for the junior's second of year, bringing the score to 2-0.
A few minutes before the end of the stanza, Ito passed the ball up the field to the waiting foot of
Aidan McLoughlin (Colchester, CT), who dribbled past defenders and shot backside post for his first of his collegiate career at 39:29.
WPI struck one minute after intermission.
Mike Montabana (Jamison, PA) carried the ball up the field following a pass by
Santino Bazzini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and a flick by and booted it past the right side through the outstretched arms of Mariner netminder
Reagan Moynihan (Clayton, NC), for his third of the season at exactly 46:00.
Three different Boynton Hill goalkeeper protected the net.
Julian Quaresima (East Meadow, NY) posted one save in the first half en route to the shutout.
Brendan Ross (Winchester, MA) and
Floris Huiskers (Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, Holland) split time in net for the closing 45 minutes of action, with Huiskers adding a save. Moynihan and
Vladimir Ouellette (Mill Valley, CA) divided time in goal for the Mariners. Moynihan corralled three saves and Ouellette blocked four shots.
The visitors held a 26-3 edge in shots and attempted all five of the match's corner kicks.
John-John Dickenson (Advance, NC) and
Gabriel Toledo (Chatham, NJ) teamed up for the three Mariner shots on the day.
Both squads return to action Saturday as WPI will travel to NEWMAC-foe Springfield for a 3pm contest as Maine Maritime will celebrate their seniors as they welcome UMaine-Presque Isle for a 1pm Senior Day matchup.
