Men’s Soccer Falls to Coast Guard in Saturday NEWMAC Road Tilt

New London, CT --- WPI men's soccer dropped a 2-0 conference match at Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

With the result, the Engineers fall to 9-4-4 and 1-2-4 in conference as the hosting Bears advance to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league action.

WPI's Anthony Previte (Andover, MA) fired the first strike for the Crimson and Gray that was kept at bay by John Putnam (Halfmoon, NY) just 3:53 into the match. Andres Villasana (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL) recorded back-to-back shots off target before a ball was drilled in the bottom left corner by Coast Guard's Aki Freeman(San Diego, CA) to register the go-ahead goal.

Savio Ketnouvong (Paxton, MA) recorded his first save of the afternoon after redirecting Jake Fish's (Little Silver, NJ) shot to keep the deficit at one goal. For the Engineers, Matthew Biando (Atlanta, GA) and Alexander Kovacs (Hopkinton, MA) tallied the final shots leading to the end of the half but were off target as Coast Guard enjoyed a 1-0 advantage at the break.

WPI and the Bears exchanged shots as Santino Bazzini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Mike Montabana(Jamison, PA) marked the best looks of the second half before Jack Lopez (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL) and Michael O'Brien (Mays Landing, NJ) connected on a give-and-go play. Lopez threw a ball in to O'Brien who tapped back to Lopez who fired a shot from deep outside of the box to the upper backside of the net past an outstretched Ketnouvong for the 2-0 advantage at 79:42. Final shots by Jason Hrkach (Lexington, MA) and Evan Haas(Concord, NH) strayed off goal for the Engineers leading to the 2-0 result in favor of Coast Guard.

Both squads return home for action on Wednesday as WPI hosts MIT for a tilt scheduled for 7pm as Coast Guard hosts Emerson at 6pm.
