Field Hockey Posts Four Different Scorers in Non-Conference Road Shutout at Keene State

Keene, NH --- WPI Field Hockey tallied a goal in every quarter by four different Engineers en route to 4-0 shutout victory at Keene State in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Crimson and Gray advances to 10-6 and Keene State drops to 14-5.

The hosts recorded the first few strikes of the match stemming from an Irini Stefanakos (Fitchburg, MA) corner leading to an Alessandra Vidal (Selden, NY) shot that was blocked by the Engineers defense. Grace Bazin (Westminster, VT) fired off another shot for WPI and was redirected by Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA). The visitors then turned the pitch as Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) and Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) rattled off three-straight bids but were kept away by Keene State's Katelyn Nicotera (Medfield, MA). WPI's Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) capped off the shooting spree as she found the back of the cage for the go-ahead goal just 3:33 into the match. Both squads traded shots on frame but were saved by Moreau and Nicotera to conclude the opening stanza of action at 1-0 in favor of the Engineers.

WPI kicked off the second quarter of play with a well-executed penalty corner inserted by Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) to Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) who played the ball into a scrum in front of the cage as Dutson finished the play by tapping it in to extend the Engineers' lead to 2-0. Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) was able to get another shot on target for the Crimson and Gray but were saved by Nicotera.

The Crimson and Gray kept pushing on the offensive end as Dutson and Powers pestered the Owls defense before Powers tallied her seventh goal of the season and extended the score to 3-0. Meinhold registered a shot but was kept clear by Keene State's Molly Murray (Gorham, ME) as she earned the defensive save. Sollecito connected with Martineau on a penalty corner for a good shot opportunity but was kept at bay by the Owls' Clara Gorman (Stratham, NH). WPI recorded three more penalty corners but were unable to extend the lead as Gorman recorded three saves to keep the Engineers off the board after taking over in the cage.

Meinhold had another look at the goal and was yet again denied by another Owls defensive save by Demetria Gonzalez (Merrimack, NH). Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) took over duties in the cage for the visitors to start the fourth quarter and recorded four saves in the final 15 minutes of play. Martineau rounded out the scoring for WPI with her fifth goal of the season at the 54:43 mark.

WPI wraps up the regular season on Saturday, entertaining Wellesley at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium at 3pm.  The Engineers are locked into the third seed for next week's NEWMAC Tournament and will host a quarterfinal contest on Tuesday at a time to be determined but the game is critical to Wellesley, whose playoff possibilities range from hosting a quarterfinal themselves to not qualifying for the postseason.  Keene State, the second seed in next week's Little East Tournament, closes out the regular season Saturday with a trip to Union (NY) for a 5pm matchup.
