WORCESTER -- The WPI men's basketball team led buzzer-to-buzzer as the Engineers snagged the Ted Coghlin Tournament title with a 74-60 victory over visiting Amherst on Saturday night at Harrington Auditorium.
The Engineers, who has won six of the eight tournament titles, improves to 14-2 in the tournament all-time, going to 3-0 on the season. The Mammoths even their season mark to 1-1.
WPI was paced by Tournament MVP
Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA), who tied for game-high honors with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while also recording seven assists and four rebounds. The senior also took home MVP honors a season ago.
Brett Marelli (Hampton, NH) contributed 11 points on an efficient 4-of-7 from the field, while
Justin Molen (Newark, DE) added 10 points and five boards.

Tim Reidy (Needham, MA) each chipped in nine points, while
Joe Pebley (Fort Worth, TX) led WPI with seven rebounds.
Amherst was led by
Ryker Vance (Naples, FL), who tallied a team-high 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and added a game-high nine rebounds.
Marc Garraud (Lynn, MA) contributed 13 points with
Bobby Sommers (Southborough, MA) chipping in with 10 points.
A Reidy three opened the scoring for WPI, who built a 20-9 lead just over halfway through the first period. After the Mammoths cut into the advantage, another Engineers run, backed by four Molen points, pushed the hosts to a 26-10 lead with 5:47 on the clock. Amherst had one more spurt in the closing minutes of the first, outscoring WPI 10-5, but the Engineers' advantage stood at 13 points (35-22) at the break.
In the second half, Amherst closed the gap slightly in the early action, making it an 11-point game on a Sommers lay-up four minutes in. WPI countered with an 11-4 run with Callahan scoring four during the stretch, to open their largest lead of the half at 51-33. A 13-7 Amherst run got the deficit down to 12 points (58-46) with 7:25 to play, but seven points from Callahan and nine Engineer free throws closed out the win for WPI.
For the game, WPI out-shot Amherst 46.3% (25-54) to 27.7% (18-65). The Engineers also held the Mammoths to just 15.4% (4-26) from beyond the arc. A combined 53 free throws were taken in the game, with each team hovering around 70% from the charity stripe.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, November 19, at 7pm. WPI will face UMass Dartmouth on the road, while Amherst hosts Springfield.
Tournament Consolation: Saint Joseph's (ME) 98, WestConn 84
In the consolation game, Saint Joseph's (ME) (2-2) won a 98-84 shootout over Western Connecticut State (1-3), backed by strong perimeter shooting. The Monks made 18 threes, coming at a 47% (18-38) clip, including shooting 56% (9-16) from long-range in the second half.
SJC's
Julian Llopiz (Boston, MA) led all scorers with 21 points, including 3-of-7 from deep.
Derek Salvatore (Johnston, RI) added 20 points and 11 rebounds, while
John Paul Frazier (York, ME) and
Wani Donato (Portland, ME) chipped in 14 points each. WestConn was paced by
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, NY), who scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, NY) added 16 points and seven rebounds, while
C.J. Riley (Yonkers, NY) contributed 13 points off the bench.
WestConn outscored Saint Joseph's in the paint (54-18) but couldn't overcome the barrage of Monks' threes. SJC held a slim 45-40 lead at halftime and used a 9-2 run early in the second half to create separation. Still, the Wolves kept the game close, cutting the deficit to just three midway through the second half. However, one final Monks run pushed the lead to as many as 17, as Saint Joseph's finished out the win.
