WORCESTER -- -- The WPI volleyball team sent its seniors off in style with a convincing 3-0 sweep of visiting Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday in Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers used set scores of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-22, to move to 7-17, while the Buccaneers drop to 4-19.
Prior to the match, the Engineers honored seniors
Emilia Krum (Saratoga Springs, NY),
Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA), and
Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) for their contributions to the Crimson and Gray.
Eldridge stuffed the stat sheet with eight kills, 12 assists, and four aces, while
Fiona Gillis (Manchester, NH) also tied for team-high honors with eight kills. Hudson notched seven kills and a match-high five aces, adding three blocks. Krum racked up 11 digs on the day, tying for match-high honors, while
Alana Harris (Lowell, MA) notched 10 digs.
For the Buccaneers,
Gemma Geisler (Duxbury, MA) had five kills and
Alanys Torres (Caguas, Puerto Rico) added four to lead the offense.
Shayla Narodowg (Wellington, CO) had a well-rounded stat line with three kills, 14 assists, five digs, and four blocks, while
Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) tied for match-best honors with 11 digs.
Though MMA scored the first point of the match, WPI quickly took over, building a 10-3 advantage helped by strong serving, including back-to-back Hudson aces. The Bucs made it an 11-6 set on a Narowdowg kill, but the Engineers rebounded with an 8-2 surge that made it 19-8. The visitors got as close as 20-12, but WPI finished out the set with five unanswered points to take it 25-12.
Set two was tight at the outset, with the lead changing hands three times. However, a 6-1 run from WPI put the hosts up 11-5 on a block from Eldridge and
Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA). The Buccaneers battled back and cut into the deficit with a 5-2 surge that closed the gap to 13-10, but a 10-3 surge from WPI made it a 10-point advantage. MMA scored on back-to-back serves, but an error and an ace from Hudson put away set two for the Engineers at 25-15.
Mass Maritime had an early lead in set three, but an 7-2 WPI run saw the hosts take over with an 8-4 advantage. The Bucs battled all the way back to tie the frame at 14-14 on a Narodowg and
Chloe Johnson (Spencer, MA) block, but a 5-1 Engineers serve made it 19-15. Once again, MMA responded, scoring six straight points to lead 21-20. After trading sideouts to make it a 22-22 set, WPI finished it out, as an MMA error and kills from Gillis and Eldridge won it 25-22 and 3-0.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, November 5 at 7pm. The Engineers jump back into NEWMAC play at Wellesley, while MMA hosts Regis.
