Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ),
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) and
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) each won twice as the WPI wrestling program ventured to New York state on Saturday to wrestle a tri-match at Oneonta with Utica. The Engineers rolled over the Pioneers 51-6 to start the day before falling in a tight 27-21 match to the host Red Dragons.
WPI moved to 5-1 on the season while Oneonta State remains undefeated at 7-0 while Utica slips to 0-5 overall.
The Crimson and Gray captured nine of 10 bouts to start the day versus Utica. Thatcher, ranked third in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) and 20th nationally in the Open Mat Rankings at 125 pounds, got his two-win day started with an 8-1 victory before the Pioneers took their lone lead of the day with a pin at 133 pounds.
After that it was all WPI as the Engineers strung together five consecutive falls followed by three straight wins by forfeit.
Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) began the run of pins 12 seconds into the third period of his match at 141 before the duo of
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) and
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) posted first period falls at 149 and 157, respectively.
Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA) continued the spurt with a pin at 3:45 of his 165-pound bout while Tully, ranked fourth in the NEWA at 174 pounds, was able to pin his foe just 1:44 into his match.
Ahead 33-6 with three bouts remaining, the Crimson and Gray received 18 additional points to close out the Pioneers with 184-pounder

Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) and heavyweight Bowen having their arms raised in victories after the Pioneers forfeited the final three weight classes.
The Engineers jumped out to a 9-0 advantage over the undefeated Red Dragons. Thatcher improved to 12-2 on the season with his sixth fall of the year at the 3:41 mark of his bout at 125.
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) kept the Boynton Hillers rolling with a high-scoring 13-6 victory that moved the NEWA's eighth-ranked grappler to 11-6 overall at 133 pounds.
Oneonta State then stormed back to capture the next four bouts, including a pair of tech falls and a major decision, to surge ahead 17-9. Tully got WPI back into the win column at 174 pounds by collecting his second first period pin of the day and his seventh fall of the season to up his 2024-25 record to an impressive 14-1. The Red Dragons secured the team victory with a pin at 184 and a major decision at 197 before Bowen beat the buzzer to pin his opponent at heavyweight just before the first period horn. The junior now has six wins this season with three falls.
The Crimson and Gray are off until 2025 for final exams and the holidays. WPI is back on the mat on Saturday, January 11th, hosting Bridgewater State and Wesleyan in the Sports & Recreation Center for a tri-match beginning at noon.
